Circles of Shared Presence
Dear Janice,
In shifting from ego-system to eco-system awareness, from a silo- to a systems view, or from extractive to regenerative, Otto Scharmer writes that our collective journey of transformation calls for the creation of enabling infrastructures. Embedded in these infrastructures are fields of deepened connection, of "radical shared presence," in which we can support one another in transformation and healing.
In her reflection below on the power of the "third space," Gemma Jiang speaks to the "transformative potential of social spaces." And in Ubuntu.Lab Africa, the philosophy of Ubuntu "I am because you are" weaves together a lab of connection and creativity. Whether a solidarity or coaching circle, a hub around a particular issue, or a lab or program, we invite you to explore examples of shared presence and join us in building these enabling infrastructures.
Very best wishes,
the PI and u-school team

The story of Ubuntu.Lab is one of the coming together of community, of uniting across borders and of discovering the potential that lies within a collective intention and will. This is Part One of Two; in Part Two of this series, we will take a closer look at the impact of Ubuntu.Lab by looking at some stories and prototypes that are emerging all over the continent of Africa.

Responsible Leadership in Disruptive Times: The Need for Local Chapters of a School for Transformation
Maria Daniel Brás describes bringing Theory U to support societal transformation, creating a generative field of trusted and compassionate relationships — with ourselves, others and nature.
"I went forward and proposed a Theory U Introduction for Responsible Leaders in Iberia (Portugal and Spain). Although I had been wanting to implement Theory U locally since 2015, life has its own rhythm, and it had not been possible yet. Now, I was sensing the moment was coming closer. Something was calling for action in the constellation that was forming around the event."

Coaching Circles: Third Space Revisited
Gemma Jiang expands on her exploration of coaching circles as a “third space”, the space outside family and work: "Together, we are less vulnerable and more empathetic. Together, we create and heal; we let go and let come; we gain clarity and move forward."
Drawing on her personal experience, Gemma writes: "I realized that family is simply one form of social space. Outside of biological families, we still can find many opportunities to experience loving and compassionate social spaces. Loving and compassionate social spaces held by many generous souls contributed the most to my healing journey.”
