A few updates as the Spring Sports Season officially begins on Monday, March 8th with the first day of practice. The first regular season play date is March 26th.

  • RETURN TO COMPETITION - SPRING SPORTS: By clicking this link, you will find the Spring Sports considerations which have been developed by PIAA staff, PIAA Spring Sport Steering committees, PIAA Sports Medicine Advisory Committee and ultimately approved by the PIAA Board of Directors. Please review these considerations as you begin your officiating season. Your Chapter interpreter will go over them in more depth during a chapter meeting. **Please note the masking policy for spring sport officials located at the top of page 8.

  • INACTIVE STATUS: If you will not be officiating this spring, please consider going inactive. The form can be found by clicking here. Please note, PIAA registration fees and current Commonwealth of PA required background clearances must be up to date to be approved for inactive status

  • RETIREMENT: If you are planning to retire, the form can be found by clicking here.

  • MANDATORY RULES MEETINGS: Officials are reminded attendance at the mandatory rules meeting can be completed by signing in to your profile on the PIAA website and watching the recording. This is available, at no cost, until March 12, 2021. You can also obtain credit by attending your in-person or virtual rules meeting held by your chapter.

  • CHAPTER MEETING CREDIT: Officials must attend 4 chapter meetings during the 2021 season for their sport. One chapter meeting attendance credit can be obtained by taking the pre-season examination by scoring 80% or higher. This can also be located within your profile. This will be available until March 26, 2021.

  • SPRING SPORTS OFFICIALS BULLETIN: Information on how to log in and view the mandatory meeting and attendance exam, as well as other pertinent information, can be found by in the Spring Officials Bulletin.

  • MASK MANDATE: The current masking mandate from the Pennsylvania Department of Health can be found here. For a FAQ on the mask mandate, click here. An excerpt from the FAQ:
  • Does the Order apply to athletes and sports activities?
  • Yes. Everyone who participates in sport activities including coaches, athletes (including cheerleaders), and spectators must wear a face covering, such as a mask, unless they fall under an exception in Section 3 of the Order.
  • Indoors: Coaches, athletes (including cheerleaders), and spectators must wear face coverings, when indoors and where another person or persons who are not members of the individual's household are present in the same space, irrespective of physical distance. This includes while actively engaged in workouts, competition, and on the sidelines, etc.
  • Outdoors: Coaches, athletes (including cheerleaders), and spectators must wear face coverings if they cannot maintain sustained physical distance from persons outside of their household. This includes while actively engaged in workouts, competition, and on the sidelines, in the dugout, etc. If sustained six-foot distancing can be maintained, face coverings may be removed when outdoors.
  • **Note: While the Q & A listed above does not mention officials, officials will follow the same guidelines as athletes with regard to the masking order.
  • **Also, PIAA has requested officials be part of the vaccination group Governor Wolf recently updated for educators. No response on the request to date.

Have a great spring season!

Sincerely,

Pat Gebhart
