British Columbia and Yukon Face?

Shiming Huang, a student in the Master of Community Planning program at Vancouver Island University, is conducting research for her thesis entitled “What Challenges do Planners in British Columbia and Yukon Face?". In her research, she aims to identify what sort of challenging issues practicing planners working in BC and Yukon encounter, and whether academic resources are available to help address the issues.

All PIBC members are welcome to participate in the anonymized survey which will take around 15 minutes to complete. Thank you for taking the time to consider contributing!

Downtown revitalization in small and mid-sized cities in BC:
Assessing the strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.

Dr. Rylan Graham from the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) is leading a new study about downtown revitalization in British Columbia.

Planners based in small and mid-sized cities in BC (populations 4000 – 500,000) are asked to complete a short survey. Your participation in this survey will help the research team better understand the challenges planners face with downtown revitalization and help to establish best practices. As an added bonus, when you complete the survey, you’ll be entered to win one of THREE $100 gift cards to a local restaurant in the downtown of your community.

PSB Professional Examination - Fall Sitting
Registration Opens in July
Save the date for the Fall 2023 sitting of the Professional Examination on September 18 which will take place remotely using online proctoring technology. No in-person locations will be hosted and candidates will not be required to find an invigilator. Registration opens later this July. Click here for complete information on the Fall 2023 PSB exam.

The new 2023 Professional Examination Study Guide and updated Additional Readings are available online. The new Guide builds upon the 2021 version to help you prepare, based on feedback from Candidates and the virtual Examination format. Use the new Study Guide to supplement your preparations and your review of the previous Professional Examination Study Guide.

PIBC SCC Summer Sketch School
Join the PIBC South Coast Chapter's Summer Sketch School in collaboration with Erick Villagomez! The series is intended to cover a variety of drawing fundamentals related to different environments and topics, building sequentially from one session to another. Although each session can be stand-alone and people of all skills and levels are welcome accordingly, the most benefits will come from attending all in the sequence provided. Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) Walking Tour & Social - July 20
Walking Tour
Register and join the PIBC Vancouver Island South (VIS) Chapter on this unique cultural learning tour on July 20 from 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM. Mark Albany, a member of the Songhees Nation, will lead a walking tour of his ancestral lands. This tour invites participants to look at Victoria from the Lək̓ʷəŋən (Lekwungen) point of view, and considers the facets of planning, reconciliation, inclusivity and multiculturalism. FALL 2023 Elective Course Highlights:

PADM 305 Policy Skills course provides local government professionals the knowledge and skills they need to find effective solutions to complex problems they face in their work. Students learn to apply a systematic approach to analyzing complex public policy issues and options, and writing effective policy. This course will be offered in Kelowna as a mixed mode course which combines both in person AND online class sessions. PADM 307 Ethics course examines the role of local government professionals in establishing, applying and maintaining ethical standards, integrity, civility and decorum in public institutional processes and relationships. Current and emerging issues impacting the environment of the responsible public servant will be discussed.
