In just the last couple of months, the amount of news, interest, and new products around CompactPCI Serial has spiked significantly. We have received multiple inquiries for market information on the technology just in the last few weeks. Existing members and potential new members have been evaluating the development of new product lines based on the architecture. At the same time, current CompactPCI Serial vendors continue to develop products and rack up design wins. One of our members just announced a significant military win using CompactPCI Serial and are dedicating more resources around the standard.
With CompactPCI Serial Space ratified and several rugged CompactPCI Serial solutions announced, the question begs "will we start to see a growth trend for the specification in Mil/Aero applications?" A few of our members supported a recent
PICMG article on this topic
, and in speaking to others in the industry, there is evidence of such a trend. In the article, we showed a couple of rugged ATR and board designs for CompactPCI Serial in defense applications.
At the recent AUSA show, both COM Express and CompactPCI Serial products were on display. The PICMG Systems & Technology publication has a new article expressing significant popularity for the COM Express architecture in Mil/Aero. The new Type 7 seems to be getting significant interest with it's server class performance in a proven small form factor.
With the versatility and performance of COM Express and new CompactPCI Serial Space products bringing even more ruggedized versions of the spec into the market, it stands to reason that we'll continue to see expanded use of these PICMG specifications in Mil/Aero applications.
