LIFE IN PRISON DURING COVID-19
We're still rescuing and training dogs during COVID-19!

The COVID-19 prison lockdown has made our life even more challenging than the usual nonprofit challenges. Prison staff are able to safely take rescued shelter dogs into the Dog Dorm where the inmates excitedly wait for the new pups to love and train. Catherine Laria, our Executive Director, is conducting training classes from outside two security chain link fences by keeping appropriate distancing and wearing a mask so the inmates' training can continue. Adopters are still able to apply online from our website and view adoptable dogs.

We recently received a letter from an inmate in the prison telling us what it's been like in the 1 Charlie Dog Dorm during COVID-19 while the prison is in lockdown.

THE PIP PHOTO CONTEST!

Get those cell phone cameras ready to capture your precious pets (any pets, not just dogs) into the Friends of Paws in Prison photo contest! We're in the process of coming up with some great prizes for the photo contestants who get the most votes when our contest begins on September 1! More details about the contest will be explained in our August newsletter so be sure to watch for it.

Do you have any prizes to contribute to the contest (pet gift baskets, gift cards, anything)? This can be a great advertising opportunity for a business because your business will be listed in our online advertising. If you have any prizes to donate to our contest winners, let us know by sending an email before August 15 to:
If You Shop on Amazon ....
The power of our Friends of Paws in Prison community is the support and love we have for this unique organization. If you have an Amazon online account, there are two ways you can help Paws in Prison. First, consider listing Friends of Paws in Prison as a recipient of a small percentage of your Amazon shopping total. When you shop at  smile.amazon.com , the AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible products to Friends of Paws in Prison if you designate us as your nonprofit recipient! This is a great option for those of you who are not in the position of making a financial donation.

Second, we have also set up an Amazon Wish List for items needed in the prison. Because we are a small nonprofit organization, every little bit really helps. If you could help by buying a toy or treat or something else on our wish list from time-to-time, the dogs would be very grateful! Just CLICK HERE to see our wish list. Our desire is to make the dogs' prison life as happy and comfortable as possible.

The Board, Ladies in 1 Charlie and the Paws Dogs thank you!!
Challenges During COVID-19
Most nonprofits are struggling right now. They rely on grants and donations to survive. The Friends of Paws in Prison Board of Directors had some exciting and fun events planned that have now been canceled due to the coronavirus. Our dogs are doing their part to combat the stresses that arise during times like this. As the prison letter referred to in our first article showed, the ladies in prison are learning coping skills through their relationship with the shelter dogs while the prison is in lockdown. For those who are working and/or sheltering at home, owning a dog has wonderful mental health benefits as we discussed in our last newsletter.

What really helps are monthly donations that we can count on - no matter the size. One Board member is no longer paying her monthly gym fee due to Covid, so she is now doing a monthly donation to Friends of Paws in Prison in place of the gym fee.

Please help spread the word about Paws in Prison! Consider us for recurring monthly donations , memorial donations, legacy gifts as well as one-time donations. And let us know if you have any great ideas to help us get our name and mission out there so we can continue to "save more than dogs!" If you want to discuss more with us about your giving, send an email to:

Paws in Prison Testimonial
Excerpt from an Inmate in the Program

Working with shelter animals and sheltered people is another world unto itself. A world where "respect" must be earned through one's actions at being fair, consistent, and firm. A level of professionalism is expected of me and my peers. The challenges of learning and teaching in this setting has been accomplished by using only the kindest and gentlest methods. Each small step forward is celebrated and each step backwards has been a learning experience. ... Then we share what we have learned with our family and friends, bringing a positive impact to many levels of life, including service to the community by saving a dog's life and enriching the lives of families who adopt.
WE'LL BE BACK AGAIN IN AUGUST!
