It is hard to believe that fall is once again here and we will welcome a new group of interprofessional learners to UCSF!
I am grateful for your contributions to the PIPE mission of promoting interprofessional education and practice at UCSF. We could not do the work we do without the extraordinary efforts of our committee co-chairs, committee members, and faculty facilitators. In this newsletter you will read about the newest recipients of the PIPE-Academy of Medical Educators Excellence in Interprofessional Teaching Awards and about a new interprofessional rotation involving nurse practitioner, medical, and pharmacy students at a diabetes camp for youth, spearheaded by an interprofessional team led by Maureen McGrath, RN, MS, PNP and Linda Stephan, RN, MS, PNP.
In the upcoming year, we are excited to move our Core Principles of Interprofessional Practice course for first- and second-year students back to the in-person setting so that our learners can interact face-to-face. We will continue to work to expand interprofessional learning opportunities in clinical settings through our Interprofessional Clinical Opportunities Grant and are excited to launch an Interprofessional Collaboration Scholars program for all UCSF health professional students (read on for more information!).
I would love to connect with you to hear your ideas about how to move the PIPE mission forward. We will be having our annual PIPE Virtual Open House on Wednesday, November 2, 10-11:30 a.m. We would love to have you join us to celebrate our accomplishments and plan for the upcoming year! If you are interested in joining us, please reach out to Nathan Jew ( nathan.jew@ucsf.edu).
With gratitude,
Maria Wamsley

Interprofessional Elective at Diabetes Youth and Family Camp
|
|
The Diabetes Youth and Families (DYF) which operates Bearskin Meadow Camp has had a relationship with UCSF since 1938 when the residential camp was founded by Dr. Mary Olney (alum 1932). This past summer, the DYF and UCSF offered its first official interprofessional experience for medicine, pharmacy, and nursing students. Three nursing students, one pharmacy student, and one medical student participated in a week-long residential diabetes camp in Kings Canyon National Park under the direction of SON faculty Maureen McGrath, PNP, and community preceptor, Deborah Simon Weisberg, MD, family practice residency director at Lifelong Medical. The students participated in daily didactic and case study learning and were fully integrated into the medical management of type 1 diabetes in this adventure camp setting.
“I enjoyed learning from and participating with other healthcare professionals while at camp. Each person and profession bring a new set of knowledge and skills that we can all learn and benefit from and this was very insightful for me as a student and future professional in the field. I will be taking this experience and put it into practice because I realize how incredibly helpful and important it is to reach out to other people in the team that may have more knowledge or different viewpoints.” – Yessenia Quintanilla, RN, PNP-Student
A special thank you to Cat Tram (SOP), Maria Wamsley (SOM), and Linda Stephan (SON) for helping conceptualize this interprofessional experience and to our community partner DYF for allowing our students such an amazing opportunity to participate in this fun and educational camp.
