We've made it through the Easter season and are now turning our thoughts to summer! I'm sure many of us are counting the days until the end of the school year. Spring concerts are imminent, and we are making our summer vacation plans. Unfortunately, I must announce that we have had to cancel the Las Vegas Red, White, & Bells Conference due to low registration numbers. The Conference Committee and ExCom also felt it would be irresponsible to host an event that would result in a significant financial loss if we were to move forward with it.
But all is not lost! There is also a plan in place to pivot, much as we did in 2020 with the virtual event Handbell Encounters of the Area 12 Kind, and offer alternative smaller events to any interested parties. One such event is Bells on the Beach, which is described in the featured article spot below.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Vegas conference committee for the hundreds of volunteer hours that went into the planning of this conference over the last four plus years. Our decision to cancel the Vegas Conference was not made lightly and we want to honor the work that has been done to plan the best conference we could. As we look ahead, the board will continue to think outside the box and look tirelessly for effective ways to meet the ever changing needs and desires of our guild.
May we continue to find renewal and inspiration in our lives and music-making.

Just a quick word about Red, White & Bells. We would like to thank the Clinicians, Instructors, and Vendors that were supporting this event, as well as our UNLV contact Carrissa Wilcox. We would also like to give a shout out to the Vegas committee that worked so hard on this event for more than 5 years. They include: Alison Pruett, Tess Houston, Sharon Guilliams, Marquise Usher, Sandy Haynes, Sandi Walker-Tansley, Marci Nuoffer, Scott Leggett, and Kendra Symonds.
Some logistics: if you registered for the event you will be receiving a full refund from UNLV. This includes the $20 non-refundable registration fee. If you ordered conference shirts but have not received them, Third Bell on the Right will refund your money. If you have any questions or comments about Red, White & Bells you can contact Allison Pruett at vegas.area12@handbellmusicians.org or Sharon Guilliams at registrar.Area12@handbellmusicians.org.
One word that certainly has come to prominence in the last two years is the word “pivot.” Area 12 did this when we had to cancel the 2020 Red, White & Bells Conference and pivoted to providing Handbell Encounters of the Area 12 Kind. Well once again Area 12 is pivoting. While we can’t meet in Las Vegas, we would like to introduce you to our pivot.

On April 7 and 8, 2022, Gail Berg (Membership), Marci Nuoffer (Chair Elect) and Barb Walsh (North Nevada RC) attended the Nevada Music Educators Association (NMEA) All-State Conference at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The table we were assigned was in the new Church Fine Arts building, bottom level.
|
|
|
|
Hundreds of students attending the event passed our table between rehearsals or on their way to meals. Many stopped by and rang a bell or chime. A few stopped by every time they walked by, enjoying playing the bells and chimes (many for the first time) or playing out a section of a piece they were working on with their main instrument.

Hello LA Metro,
By the time you read this, my group’s spring concert will be in the books. It was a great concert. Being an engineer who spent most of my career in regulatory compliance, it is easy to concentrate on those things that we can improve. Continuous improvement was the mantra, and it spills over into my everyday life. I have to consciously take time to account for the great things that we accomplished and there were many. When writing the concert commentary, I came to the point where I say “Come see us at x, y and z on a, b and c. But I don’t have dates nailed down for the holiday season quite yet like I would pre-pandemic, but that is ok! I tell you this to remind you to be kind to yourself, it may take a little while to get to where we are going post-pandemic.
|
|
In an effort to define what you want post – pandemic, I invite you to complete the LA Metro event survey. Without your input, it will be a crap-shoot, if events you want to attend are scheduled.

Bells on the Beach is in the south end of our backyard. I hope you will consider attending. For those near San Clemente, there will be pickup rehearsals on Mondays 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm in June. If interested in attending the pickup rehearsals, please contact me. We may need people to fill positions, so if you want to ring even though you may not be attending the event, let me know. Also please let me know if you would like to host a pickup rehearsal in your area.
A second request, regarding Bells on the Beach. If you are in mid-to-south Orange County and would be willing to lend equipment for those 4 days, please let me know.
Keep Ringing
Sharon

Can you believe it's May already? I feel like it was January just yesterday! I guess time flies whether you're having fun or not.
My church group usually takes the summer off, but because we had nearly two years without regular rehearsals, I've decided to offer skill-building sessions every other week in June, July, and August, working on things like bell handling, multi-bell techniques, articulation, rhythm, etc.
Speaking of summertime skill-building, I know we are all disappointed by the cancelation of not only the SoCal Spring Ring, but also the Area 12 conference in Vegas. However, please do take a look at our "pivot" event "Bells on the Beach" in San Clemente. There will be massed ringing and skill-building classes as well as Beach Time! I know that it's going to be a great event, especially because both Barb Walsh and Stevie Berryman have agreed to still be our clinicians. Go check out the event and registration information here. Bells on the Beach
I hope to see you there!
My best,
-Michèle

Teachers: Would you like the use of a three octave set of handbells or handchimes to add interest and a new dimension to your music class?
Area 12 encourages schools and other educational institutions, both public and private, to develop educational programs using handbells and handchimes.
To support the development of such programs, Area 12 has six 3-octave sets of handbells and three 3-octave sets of handchimes for loan.
