Jewish Music & Arts Festival August 16

Texas singer Joe Buchanan, described as someone who “makes country music that is steeped in Torah,” will headline the 50th Annual Westchester Jewish Music & Arts Festival at Kensico Dam Plaza.

The Festival is sponsored by the Westchester Jewish council.

DATE Aug 16

PLACE: Kensico Dam, Valhalla, NY

TIME: 12 PM- 6:00 PM

ADMISSION: free

A Note on Summer Services

We encourage you to join us at the Pelham Jewish Center for Shabbat services during these summer weekends when many people are away.

Shabbat Services:

Friday evenings at 6:00 PM;

Saturday mornings at 9:30 AM (followed by Kiddush lunch)

Whether you are a regular or it’s been a while since your last visit, we look forward to welcoming Shabbat together with you!

This Month in Jewish History

Saul Bellow, one of the leading postwar American writers, was born July 10, 1915 in Lachine, Quebec to immigrant parents who fled from Russia to Canada in 1913 and then subsequently emigrated to Chicago after his father, a bootlegger, was beaten. When he was a student at Northwestern University, the English-department chairman cautioned Bellow against majoring in English, saying "No Jew could really grasp the tradition of English literature."

He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1976 in recognition of an enormous body of work that brought the struggles of Jewish assimilation into mainstream literary culture, starting with his picaresque classic, The Adventures of Augie March. Bellow died April 5, 2005, at the age of 89. In one of his novels (Ravelstein), a character utters the memorable line, “Anyone who wants to govern (this) country has to entertain it."

PJC Library News

The Library is open.

New books can be found on the mantle. To check out a book, write your name and the date on the card in the back of the book and leave the card in the office upstairs.

Return all borrowed books to the blue bin on the window ledge in the library. Please don't shelve returned books!
