Join our Lag BaOmer Bonfire!

Join our LC students on May 5 for a bonfire marking Lag BaOmer ל״ג בעומר It's the 33rd day of the Omer count (falling on 18 Iyar), a joyous Jewish holiday that breaks a 49-day, semi-mourning period between Passover and Shavuot. But it's also "bonfire night." Expect Marshmallows!

'Reach for the Sky' with the PJC Book Club

The PJC Book Club reads Matti Friedman's enthralling book, "Out of the Sky" about one of WW2's strangest episodes. In 1944, a team of young women and men who had escaped the Holocaust parachuted back into Nazi-occupied Europe under the cover of a British military operation.

The May Book Group discussion is scheduled May 18 at 8:00 pm.

To register and receive the Zoom link, please contact Barbara.

This Month in Jewish History

On Friday May 14, 1948 the British Mandate over Palestine expired, and the Jewish People’s Council headed by David Ben Gurion (Left) declared the establishment of the State of Israel "based on our historical and natural right." The declaration itself took several drafts and some fierce arguments until the final 664-word version prepared by a Tel Aviv lawyer, Mordechai Beham, and an American rabbi named Harry Solomon Davidovitz was ready.

But there was one more change: when Ben-Gurion’s wife Paula overheard him practicing the declaration guaranteeing equality irrespective of religion or race, she added, “And sex. ” The text was altered accordingly. The new state was recognized that night by the U.S. and three days later by the USSR. Four hours after the independence ceremony, Egypt bombed Tel Aviv
