TEXTILE and ART courses offering unique learning opportunities for all
In beautiful South Shropshire an area of outstanding natural beauty

How rapidly the world news changes. There is so much devastation throughout the world and now we are witnessing this latest catastrophe in the Ukraine. This week one of the choirs I sing with sang a song for all the Ukraine's, living all over the world, which we sent out through the open window in my studio where we practise. A very small gesture I know, but one full of love and meaning and I know the choir will go off and do more in their own way.
This then makes me wonder how you are all feeling about things. Whether you feel anxious, nervous, still concerned about the pandemic, maybe you have family members or friends in the Ukraine or neighbouring countries. But maybe it is also the time to do something for yourselves so that you stay strong and happy. Doing something creative and taking time away for the normal chores is something I can thoroughly recommend. Being creative in whatever form, takes you to a different place in your mind and is positive for your well-being. It is what I have relied on in getting better again.
I can only show you what I have on offer at Moor Hall Studio, (see below) but there is a lot out there if you search on-line. For example:

DesignMattersTV are are offering a new '31 days of Journaling' a sketchbook course throughout March. Although it has started you can still dip in at anytime, and catch up on missed sessions.
BUT FIRST LET'S HAVE A SPRING POEM TO CHEER US UP.....oh yes it is around the corner somewhere!!!

|
|
Feel the pulse
Of Spring’s heart beating
Winter’s broken
And now retreating
Green shoots appearing
New life forming
And all is fresh
In bright light dawning
|
|
|
Such triumphant splendour
At this annual fest
When animals awaken
And birds build their nest
And everywhere
Green is greener
And all is joy
On earth’s grand arena
|
|
|
Who could not applaud
This glorious force
Breaking through crusts
Dressing the gorse?
Such beauty on show
The season’s sensation
Nature’s encore
With true admiration

'From a Drawing to Cubism'
5/12/19/26 April
2.00 to 4.00pm (Tuesdays)
|
|
I still have places on this new ON-LINE DRAWING COURSE. The samples may look a little complex, but believe me when I say excellent results are achievable by you all and every piece of work will be different.
On this course students will work through a series of exercises resulting in two or three fully resolved tonal compositions, which they will take through to colour using pastels. Students will then be shown how works can be developed and adapted into a cubist drawing and then into colour. The course begins on March 29th with a brief introduction, so do join me on this exciting and fun project.
These first three images are students work where musical instruments were used as a starting point.

Students that attend my on-going art groups, Moor Art 1 on alternative Wednesdays and Moor Art 2 on monthly weekends all enjoy the art sessions and have certainly loved this particular project above on Cubism. This is what one student has to say about the art courses in general.
‘ I am no stranger to art courses but since enrolling at Moor Hall Studio, Bobby has got me going on all sorts of art outside my comfort zone and has kept me busy ever since. Thank you Bobby for making me work so hard – it’s just what I needed.’
If interested in learning more about either of these groups, please contact me at [email protected]

AMANDA CLAYTON
1/2/3 April
'On the Edge'
|
|
Amanda is a regular tutor at Moor Hall and students will be in wonderment of all she brings with her. Her personal work is exquisite. On this course students will explore the qualities of edges using cloth and hand stitch. Using neutrals we will enjoy learning/revisiting some traditional techniques that have the potential to be functional and creative. Using a number of Amanda’s signature techniques including inlay, layering, needle darning, applique, cutwork and pleating we will respond to some primary sources to inspire us. Lace , natural forms and some man-made items will suggest directions especially using the design elements of positive and negative.
I thoroughly recommend this course to anyone who loves hand stitch and wishes to loose themselves in three days of luxury and sheer bliss.
|
|
Amanda is now working freelance after thirty years of teaching on an Art & Design Foundation course. Running parallel with teaching Amanda has had her own creative practice having been both a member of ‘The 62 Group’ and the ‘Textile Study Group’. She has also exhibited nationally and internationally and is best known for her contemporary white work using transparency and translucency.

Box Making with a Decorated Lid
|
|
Box making can be used to showcase your patchwork, quilting and embroidery. They can be all kinds of shapes, sizes and types of lid, but on this course you will be concentrating on a rectangular box with a hinged lid, incorporating some foundation pieced patchwork or a piece of stitched work that you may have done. The course begins by learning the technique of foundation piecing or a simple piece of stitched work and this will then be incorporated into a design for your box lid. Afterwards you will be able to use the box to store those precious bits and pieces.

I have worked alongside Margaret for many years at Westhope College and know what a sound, steady and knowledgeable tutor she is.
She has been stitching for as long as she can remember. After completing a City and Guild’s Diploma in both Patchwork and Quilting and in Embroidery, she went on to teach City and Guilds Patchwork and Quilting, all at Westhope College.
She has been a member of the Embroiderers’ Guild for over 25 years and is currently the Chair of an Independent stitch group. She has exhibited as a member of several mixed media groups and has also organised several very successful textile shows in Staffordshire. Recently Margaret has been doing Ecclesiastical work, with her work currently in Cornwall, Wolverhampton and Staffordshire.

Course Description

PLACES STILL AVAILABLE ON THIS COURSE
The aim of this workshop is to explore playful ways in which images and visual information can be generated and developed through drawing. By working with individual imagery gathered in sketch books, photographs etc, we will be trying to exploit the potential of sometimes the most simple and mundane scraps of image, mark and shape.
HERE IS SOME WORK FROM THE STUDENTS WHO DID THIS COURSE LAST YEAR
|
|
Working from a series of sketchbook images, drawings, photographs etc we will explore a number of exercises and processes that will allow you to generate and develop visual information from an apparently simple starting point. By the end of the day you should have a series of images that will form the starting point for the work on day 2, which will be about development and interpretation.
The interpretation of these images into textile materials is the final stage of the project, though you may decide to stay with paper.
A course to keep you thinking and making.
