The Johnstown Flood: The Incredible Story Behind One of the Most Devastating Disasters America Has Ever Known
By David McCullough publ. 1968, 268 pgs
Historian David McCullough’s first book meticulously lays the groundwork of geology, town location, man-made negligence, disregard of signs, class differences, and weather all culminating in one of the most deadly disasters in America. It is a powerful and heart wrenchingdocumentary on the fragility of human life and the consequences of neglect.
On May 30,1889 the citizens and visitors in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, were enjoying Memorial Day festivities when a light rain started. Heavy snows had fallen in April, followed by 11 days of rain in May. As a result, the two rivers surrounding Johnstown started rising to flood levels.
Fifteen miles away and 450 feet above Johnstown sat Lake Conemaugh, a man-made lake formed by damming the waters from several creeks. During spring, the lake would cover 450 acres with an estimated 20 millions tons of water. The lake, dam, and surrounding lands were owned by South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club as an exclusive playground for wealthy men.
Written in 1968 this book is worthy of a discussion about responsible leadership, owning mistakes, altering natural landscapes, and changing weather patterns. David McCullough urges us to learn from our past mistakes. A most timely choice by Adkins Arboretum’s nature club.
We welcome all to join us on November 19th at 2:45pm to discuss this riveting story of the Johnstown flood.
