PM's Community Spirit Award
Winner Update:
The Cape Cod Modern House Trust,
2013
Peter McMahon of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust shares with us the many interesting things the Trust has going on!

"You might say that this year was the 'end of the beginning' for our project.   The Cape Cod Modern House Trust was founded to collect, archive, and share documentation of the outer Cape's exceptional modern architecture, restore a group of important, endangered modern houses, and to relaunch them as platforms for new creative work.

We  completed the restorations of three modern houses  in collaboration with the Cape Cod National Seashore, and the houses now host our artist/scholar residency program and weekly summer stays by supporters. Through this mechanism we are now on a sustainable economic path.

Our book Cape Cod Modern Mid-century Architecture and Community on the Outer Cape, (Metropolis Books, 2014) by founding director Peter McMahon and journalist Christine Cipriani is now in its third printing in only two years, with over 10,000 copies in print.
Last year the book was awarded the 21st Annual Book Prize by Historic New England and has spread the story of the Cape's modern legacy far and wide.

Educational projects included a semester-long collaboration with students from Harvard's Graduate School of Design. The class explored the creative re-use of old building for new purposes.

In the coming year we plan to broaden our residency program, working with regional curators and engaging local students in art and architectural investigation and installations.

Happily we also have begun negotiations with the Cape Cod National Seashore to lease a fourth abandoned modern house with National Registry status."

PM's Community Spirit Awards
Community Nominations are due August 22nd
The Community Spirit Awards were introduced by Preservation Massachusetts in 2010 as a way to recognize those who embody the spirit of community based historic preservation activities in our Commonwealth.  These individual and groups are committed to their communities and are active in efforts to therein to preserve buildings, character or expand the preservation ethic.  Their efforts and work are models for others to emulate in our community and can often go unrecognized, and to that end we are proud to be able to honor them and their achievements.

Preservation Massachusetts re-named this award in 2016 in honor of the late K. Julie McCarthy, founder and president of the Friends of the North Brookfield Town House.  Julie's boundless energy and years as an educator served her well as she and the Friends worked toward the restoration of an iconic community landmark.  Upon her passing in March of 2016, the preservation community lost a dear friend but her infectious energy, friendship and legacy will continue on in the group and their mission for the Townhouse.  Julie was truly the embodiment of our Community Spirit Award.

Save the Date for our Believe in Preservation Event!
We  celebrate the K. Julie McCarthy Community Spirit Award Recipients  and announce our Most Endangered List at our biennial Believe in Preservation Event This year's "Believe in Preservation Event"  will be held on November 3 at the  Worcester Historical Museum . Stay tuned for more event details!
