Judge weighs sanctions for lawyer's flawed AI citations

A lawyer responding to a show cause has asked a federal judge in Virginia not to impose sanctions for the lawyer's use of incorrect case citations and quotations in a court filing, stating the mistakes were unintentional and stemmed from "good-faith reliance" on AI tools, according to Reuters. The lawyer said the disputed cases exist, but acknowledged "several miscitations and misquotations." He added that in two instances, quoted phrases in a filing do not appear verbatim, but those errors, “while regrettable, do not alter the substance of the legal arguments." (Reuters)
