Things a Realtor® really shouldn't do

From his opinion on escalation clauses to keeping antitrust laws in mind when posting online, Gary outlines a roll call of recent infractions he's seen made by Realtors® -- with an admonishment to keep it professional in your everyday business.

PMAR Ethics Instructor Deb Nolen offers advice on life, love and real estate

Dear Deb,

One of my contracted buyers finally found a home and got his offer accepted. I noticed in the private remarks of the listing print-out that the seller is offering a $2,000 bonus to the buyer's agent if the transaction closes in 30 days of mutual acceptance. My buyer is cash so there is a big probability that I'll be making some real money on this deal!

Do I need to tell my buyer about the bonus? I'm assuming it's just considered to be part of my commission. After all, my income is my business, right?

Tips for Your Business

Leveraging print media in the age of all things digital

When it comes to print media, you're probably envisioning the traditional ad with images of four to six houses you're currently listing. Can you say "boring"? This is what 99 percent of brokers and agents do. It's also the reason most potential clients aren't going to call you and say, "I love your ad. Can you come over for an interview?"

Congratulations to Pat Kaplan of Kaplan Real Estate Group

Congratulations to Pat Kaplan, Kaplan Real Estate Group, for receiving the NAR Distinguished Service Award at the 2016 Realtors® Legislative Meeting and Trade Expo in Washington, DC. This award is well deserved!

Since 1980, Pat has served the real estate industry, beginning at the Eugene Association of Realtors® where she found her passion for governmental affairs and legislation. After moving to Portland in 1986, she served as President of the Washington County Association of Realtors® (WCAR) in 1991, and was named WCAR Realtor® of the Year in 1992. Pat went on to serve as President of the Oregon Association of Realtors® (OAR) in 1996, and received their Realtor of the Year award that same year. Since then, Pat has continuously served as Oregon Association of Realtors® (OAR) Director and National Association of Realtors® (NAR) Director, including NAR Treasurer from 2001 to 2003. Additionally, she has served on numerous volunteer Boards, including RMLS™, OREF, the Realtor® Relief Foundation, Sentrilock, and DocuSign. Pat was inducted into the RPAC Hall of Fame in 2013, which recognizes $25,000 in personal contributions to the Realtors® Political Action Committee. Next time you see Pat (yes, she does list and sell real estate, too) please congratulate and thank her for her unparalleled industry accomplishments and service.

NAR established the DSA in 1979 to honor Realtors® who have made outstanding contributions to the real estate industry and who serve as leaders in their local communities. The award is considered the highest honor an NAR member can receive; recipients must be active at the local, state and national association levels, but must not have served as NAR president.
NAR Board Adopts Policy on Student Loan Debt

The National Association of Realtors®' Board of Directors at its May 14th meeting in Washington, DC adopted a policy that seeks to ease student debt burdens that threaten to make it harder for people to become home buyers.
