PMDA Second Annual Spring Symposium to Focus on Timely and Topical Issues in LTC
PMDA’s annual spring conference, now in its second year, returns May 15 with a virtual educational program that is both timely and topical.

The half-day program will feature four sessions:

  • Racism in Long-Term Care: A Panel Discussion - PMDA Education Committee Co-chair Danelle Snyderman, MD, CMD and panelists Schyuler Barbour-Johnson, MSN, CRNP, ANP-CN, Denine Crittendon, MPH, PhD(c), Dillard Elmore, DO, MBA, CMD, and Christopher Hwang MD will use case-based discussion and the Ubuntu photo project on microaggression to deepen our awareness and understanding of racism in LTC. 

  • FDA’s EUAs and Other Related Authorities – Elizabeth Sadove, JD, Director, MCM Regulatory Policy for the Federal Drug Administration will provide an overview of the FDA’s emergency use authorities and how “EUA” has become a household word during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • The Future of Long-Term Care – Zach Shamberg, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Health Care Association, the commonwealth’s leading advocacy organization representing Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable residents living in more than 400 member facilities across the state, will explore what nursing homes and long-term care facilities will look like post-COVID-19 and how they will operate.

  • Advocacy in LTC: COVID-19 and Beyond – PMDA Past President Daniel Haimowitz, MD, FACP, CMD and Pennsylvania State Representative Wendi Thomas will describe opportunities for advocacy, including developing relationships with elected representatives, writing opinion pieces, and interacting with the media. Their program will provide information about various national initiatives and identify useful resources for your advocacy toolbox.

Nominees Sought for the 2021 Long-Term Care Clinician of the Year Award - Deadline September 3

Each year, the Pennsylvania Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine recognizes the dedication, performance, and accomplishments of a PMDA member with the presentation of the Long-Term Care Clinician of the Year Award. The award is presented during the association’s annual meeting, scheduled this year for October 21 – 22, 2021.
 
The Long-Term Care Clinician of the Year Award is conferred on the clinician who demonstrates excellence in providing and/or promoting quality clinical care in the long-term care arena. The recipient’s vision, passion, leadership, knowledge, and commitment take patient care to exceptional levels of quality, excellence, and innovation in the facilities in which he/she serve.
 
Nominees for the Long-Term Care Clinician of the Year Award must be:
  • Nominated by NHA, DN, medical director, or other clinicians from a facility where the nominee serves as a clinician (physician, NP, or PA). The facility may be a SNF, ALF, or LIFE Program; and
  • A PMDA member in good standing.
 
The nomination letter and nominee’s CV, submitted by mail or email to the PMDA office, should focus on the clinician’s role in obtaining achievements in any or all the following areas:
  • Quality improvements;
  • Annual state survey;
  • Patient satisfaction surveys;
  • Staff morale and retention;
  • Community/hospital relations and outreach;
  • Medication management;
  • Reduction in unnecessary rehospitalizations; and
  • Overall impact of his/her role as a clinician in the facility.

The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists Pennsylvania Chapter (PA ASCP) and PMDA will host a joint virtual education session about overactive bladder management in long-term care on Thursday, May 13, from 7 – 8 p.m. The session will feature Richard Stefanacci, DO, and includes a product theater about Gemtesa (Vibegron)®. PMDA President Brian Kimmel, DO, CMD and PA ASCP President Emily Kryger, PharmD, BCGP, FASCP will open the program with introductions and announcements.
