President's Message
It seems hard to believe that my first year as President of the Chapter is nearly at an end. I guess that is a sign that it has been a busy year!
We started a new relationship with Bide Awhile shelter for animals, partnering with them on their Golf Tournament. This proved to be beneficial to both parties and we look forward to continuing it next year.
Through the PMI Educational Foundation, we once again were able to award a scholarship. This is the third year of the award and we had more applications than ever. Congratulations to Laura Muise, the winner of this year's award!
2011 continued to prove challenging for events. The chapter scheduled a full slate of events to appeal to all levels of experience. However, low registration forced us to cancel a number of events. During 2012 we will be focussing on enhancing the promotion of our events, to ensure we are able to reach registration minima. I would encourage all our members to let us know what type of events and topics they would like to see. Feedback can be sent to any member of the board, or via our LinkedIn site.
This year we continued our partnership with other local professional organisations to present another successful Professional Development Summit in May. We also worked with the Atlantic Canadian Chapters of PMI and IIBA to put on Project World*BA World Atlantic with Diversified Business Communications in November.
As my first year as President draws to a close, I thank all the members of the Board during 2011 for their support and hard work throughout the year. For those who are stepping down, I look forward to your continued participation with the Chapter and for those who are staying I look forward to working with you in 2012.
To all our volunteers, thank-you for your help, without your continued participation the Chapter would not be able to put on so many exciting events.
I also thank Bev Thiessen for her work providing part-time administrative support for the Chapter.
To all our members, I would encourage you to continue to be engaged with the Chapter. Send us your feedback and ideas, we, the Board, are here to help you grow as project managers.
To close, I wish you all Season's Greetings and I look forward to seeing you all in 2012.

ProjectWorld * Business Analyst World Atlantic - A Review
The first annual Project World * Business Analyst World Atlantic rocked Halifax for the first time November 22-23, 2011. With over 230 registered attendees, David Barrett, Conference Director, says it was a resounding success that will return again next year to Halifax's World Trade and Convention Centre. With intriguing titles like "Managing Catastrophe: Observations Of A Canadian Peacekeeper In Haiti" and "If all you've got is a hammer, all your client's problems look like nails", it's no surprise there was a draw.
The chapter provided support with membership on the Board of Advisors, advertising and of course a number of chapter members who spoke at the event. Thanks to our very own Paul Rowe, Paul Dean, Derek Dow and Ron Singer for helping organize this landmark event and to the five Chapter members who were among the many presenters. If you weren't there, you can see the program overview on the event site - just Google Project World Atlantic.

2012 Event Communications
In an effort to better serve our members, PMI Nova Scotia has been reviewing our communications strategy and will be formalizing the schedule by which we communicate events.
In the past there has been mixed coverage on how events are promoted which has resulted in our members not being aware of events and in some cases cancellations. Starting January 1 expect to see the following events communications.
- 1st day of every month: Summary email detailing PMI Nova Scotia events for the month
- Monday, 4 weeks before an event: Email detailing the event
- Monday, 2 weeks before an event: Email detailing the event as a reminder
- Day before registration deadline: Final reminder of the upcoming PMI NS event
- Additional emails further out for big events such as ProjectWorld
In addition we have decided to take the step of reviving the PMI Nova Scotia Newsletter. Starting in Q1 a newsletter will be sent to our mailing list on the last Monday of every quarter.
Through these changes we hope to be able to better communicate and serve our members. If you have any comments on the proposed communications plan please email communications@pmi.ns.ca

Getting to Know PMI NS Members
Welcome to "Members Corner"
This corner will bring you news about what PMI NS members are doing. There are a lot of interesting and exciting things happening in our area. So, to start, I will be interviewing members and putting the interviews in the newsletter, one member per newsletter. If you would like to volunteer to be interviewed, please email me (brenda@brendaniel.com). And be careful at PMI NS networking events! If I start talking with you, I just might ask you to be interviewed! I already know of some very interesting members, and hope they will share their stories. Things that I would like to include in the interviews are: what you are doing now at work that is exciting, what aspects of project management you most enjoy, tips you have for sharing with other members, and anything else you would like to add. Thanks in advance for your contributions. I look forward to hearing your stories.
