The tour provides a platform for these often-excluded voices to share their stories, experiences, and journeys throughout history in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Chloe Cooley

ICYMI: Canada Post has unveiled a new stamp honouring Chloe Cooley, a young Black woman who was known to challenge her enslavement in the late 18th century. Cooley was violently abducted and sold in 1793. We don't know what happened to Cooley afterward, but Lieutenant-Governor John Graves Simcoe, an avowed abolitionist, was able to use witness testimonies to introduce new legislation. On July 9, 1793, what became known as the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada was passed. Check out the new Heritage Minute for more about Chloe Cooley.

Uncle Tom’s Cabin

If you are looking for something to read to understand Black history, check out Uncle Tom’s Cabin. The moral of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is an anti-slavery message, highlighting the inhumanity and cruelty of slavery towards African Americans. The story exposes the violence, exploitation, and injustices faced by enslaved Black people and advocates for their freedom and equal treatment. The novel served as a catalyst for the abolitionist movement and helped to galvanize public opinion against slavery, making it a seminal work in African American history and literature.
