Presbyterian Foundation and Presbyterian Investment & Loan Program have recommended the following books for Church Treasurers. Each of these has been written by Edd Breeden, PCUSA Clergy and a long-time resource for church finances.
🕍 A Handbook For Church Treasurers: Concise Information for a Complicated Task.
-This handbook offers essential guidance for church treasurers, including record keeping, financial documentation, revenue requirements, disbursement processes, and reporting obligations to the board and congregation. It addresses key topics like restricted funds, government filings, and property management. While designed for Presbyterian churches, its principles are applicable to all denominations. With 15 years of development, this concise resource aims to simplify treasurer responsibilities and provide quick insights, making it a valuable tool for any church.
💲 The Church Treasurer's Manual
- Originally developed for church treasurers, this manual is also applicable to non-profits and includes detailed guidance on treasurer responsibilities, financial team setup, contribution processing, donor statements, record keeping, expense payment, clergy compensation, and more. Since its initial release in 2004, it has been expanded and now features sample policies and templates, including Gift Acceptance and Standard Lease policies, as well as Reserve Fund and Investment Policy examples. Designed primarily with small churches in mind, its practical tools benefit churches of all sizes.
💼 The Volunteer's Audit Guide for Churches and Other Non-Profits
- This workbook guides the internal review of your non-profit or church's financials, aiming to assure the board and donors that sound financial practices are consistently followed. It starts with a checklist of seventeen items required from your Treasurer and systematically leads the review team through bank statements, income, disbursements, personnel, reporting, and relevant financial policies, providing a practical, step-by-step approach.
