POLICY ALERT

BOOK BAN PROPOSAL

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft wants to block public funding for library books that might appeal to the “prurient interests” of minors. His proposed administrative rule, which was published in the Missouri Register on November 15, would require Missouri's 160 public libraries to adopt age-appropriateness policies. Under the rule, state funding would be denied to any library that does not comply. ArtsKC is against any form of censorship or undue burden to meet arbitrary "appropriateness" guidelines implemented by elected officials.

The Missouri Library Association vehemently opposes the proposed rule and is urging everyone who values intellectual freedom to speak up. The easiest way to voice your opposition to the proposal is to use their online form to submit your response.

The deadline to submit your response is Thursday, December 15.
