POP Alumnus, Brett Moore, talks to HS Technology Classes on his college major, Game Design!
POP alumnus, Brett Moore (Class of 2013) came to talk to the high school technology classes about his passion and college major-Game Design.
Brett is currently a sophomore at the prestigious
Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD.)
Brett wanted to "pay it forward" for current POP students and encourage them to follow their dreams. He suggested to the students to reach out to others that, at first glance, may appear "different." "Don't give up your ideals, but don't dismiss others because they are different. Brett feels that when you can look past a quirky feature in a person and not judge them, you have the opportunity meet some very interesting creative people. Brett noted, "We all need people to support us, so don't isolate yourself because they are different from who you know from POP."
Brett began as a comic artist. He found his true passion and a way to financially support himself when he entered the realm of game design.
Brett shared samples of his work, including a 3-D logo design he developed for the Minnesota Vikings football team, and he allowed the students to play with a video game he designed. "The good news is, you don't have to learn code to design video games," exclaimed Brett! "Don't get me wrong, there is a place for coders, but if you are interested in game design but don't "love numbers," this can still be an exciting path for you!"
Thanks Brett for sharing your experience with our students!
They enjoyed being encouraged to DREAM BIG!
POPCS Alumni Weekend

Reading Rescue:
Loving Labrador, Maddie, and POPCS parent,
Jane Nolan Help POPCS Kids Learn Literacy
During the month of December, each Lower School class attended a special library presentation about therapy dogs. Mrs. Jane Nolan, POPCS parent, presented the program and brought along a special visitor, Maddie, who is a Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.).
In January, Maddie and Taryn (also a R.E.A.D.) began working with students in first and second grades in the Eagles' Nest Reading Program.
Dogs are ideal reading companions because they listen attentively, are not judgmental and allow children to proceed at their own pace.
When a dog is listening, the environment is transformed, a child's dread is replaced by eager anticipation and learning occurs.
The R.E.A.D. program was recently featured in a video on Petsmart Charities website.
Click here to read the article from Petsmart Charities!
The POPCS Eagles' Nest students LOVE Maddie and Taryn!
Thanks Mrs. Nolan for bringing them to POPCS!

Nurturing the Nest
POP Parent Column
A Team Effort
by Megan Krizan
My family has a very set, tight running morning routine. This was NOT always the case. I remember when my eldest daughter was 5 and had just begun Kindergarten. Going to school 5 days a week was new to her and was a shock to her system. We had a drive, and if we didn't get in the car by 7:20, traffic ate us alive. I had it all planned out. Up at 6:30, get dressed, eat, brush hair and teeth, and go. By the third week of school my plans had fallen apart, and our mornings had become chaos. My daughter was unhappy, and I was frustrated and angry. I kept trying new ideas. I would tweak the routine to try and make it better, smoother, and more appealing to my daughter. Nothing was working. Finally it dawned on me. WE had a problem, but I was doing all the work.
You see, we as parents have the habit of taking on all of the responsibility for trying to figure out solutions for all of the problems in our families. We forget that we are not the only ones experiencing the problems and there are lots of minds available full of wonderful ideas. When we stop and include our children in the problem solving process, we help them learn about facing and solving problems, and they take greater ownership in following through with the decisions that are made. It can also be a way to bring everyone closer together.
So, I decided that I would ask my daughter for her help with our morning dilemma. After school one day, when we were both calm and had plenty of time, I introduced the 5 steps to team problem solving.
Step 1: I invited my daughter to share her point of view about the problem. In this step my only job was to listen and communicate that I understood how she was feeling. I didn't have to agree with her or defend myself. Just listen and reflect her feelings and show understanding. Once she felt heard, she was ready to listen.
Step 2: I got to share my feelings and concerns in a way that was not attaching. Saying, "YOU are doing this" and "YOU are doing that", just makes people defensive. Instead I used "I statements," such as, "I am feeling frustrated with how long it is taking to get ready."
Step 3: I invited my daughter to brainstorm ideas for a new morning routine with me. I let her share every idea she could think of. Then I shared all of my ideas.
Step 4: This one goes with step three. As she shared her ideas, I wrote every one of them down without evaluating them. Even ideas I knew would not work ("I want to lay in bed for 10 minutes while you scratch my back and then I'll get up"). If I picked apart her ideas as she was sharing them, I would stop her willingness to share. The process would stop and we would be stuck. So I wrote them all down, and then I wrote down all of mine.
Step 5: We used the list to find a way to compromise. Some ideas we both liked and kept, some were tossed out completely, and some were changed to work for both of us. We turned our separate ideas into ones we both could agree with. She even got 5 minutes of back scratching from me as she woke up instead of 10. As it turned out, that little bit of time was the transition that she needed from waking up to moving that made
all of the difference.
I was surprised at how well it worked. After 10 or 15 minutes of problem solving, we had a plan. My daughter was invested in it, and the next morning went beautifully, as did all of the mornings after that. We have had hiccups here and there, but we just go take out our original plan and problem solve again. Our routine has slowly changed over time, but some things have stayed the same. And it still works (and she still gets that back scratch.) Nurturing the Nest is written by Megan Krizan, a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered Play Therapist, and POPCS parent. She works with young children, adolescents, and teens, as well as whole families. One of her favorite things is helping parents with their toughest job... being parents! If there is a topic you are interested in hearing more about, please feel free to e-mail Megan at megan@novacestacounseling.com.

POPCS Middle School Boys Basketball Update
The 2014/15 Boys basketball teams are pleased to welcome 28 boys to the D1 and D2 squads this season. Coach Henke and Coach Wright are joined by Coach Kyle Lonquist this season as we continue to grow our MS athletic programs.
This year's D1 team is off to a 15-0 start and the team has lofty goals for themselves after a stellar (21-5) season last year. The D2 boys are coming together as a team and have a 4-4 record so far this season.
The D1 boys started the season with a hard fought win against Cistercian and followed that with wins against St. John's, Shelton and Greenhill. The D1 boys traveled to Houston to participate in the Trinity Klein Tournament on December 12th and 13th. After winning their opening game on Friday, the boys won 4 more games on Saturday closing out the tournament with a win against the well - rested hosts Trinity Klein in the championship game. This is the first POPCS boys team to win the tournament since it began in 2000. Both the D1 and D2 boys closed out 2014 with wins against Levineon, December 15. After the Christmas break and two more victories, the D1 boys played in the Providence Tournament. The boys won this tournament with victories over
Providence, Shelton and Greenhill.
January will be a challenging month for the boys as they move into the heart of the conference schedules. Conference Playoffs begin on February 3, and the Lutheran Middle School State Tournament is February 14-16, in Houston. All the games and locations can be found on the school calendar.

Curt's Corner
RESOLUTIONS
By Curt Riske,
POPCS School Life Chaplain
"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." Philippians 2:5 At the beginning of a New Year, a new semester, a new period in our life, we are encouraged to make various resolutions. Resolutions are often quite challenging and too often are forgotten after some time and effort. A well-known Christian author, Max Lucado, suggests that a great resolution could be one that is measured one day at a time. He writes, "What would your life be like, even for one day , if you were to think and act like Jesus, if His priorities governed your actions, His passions drove your decisions and His love directed your behavior? What would you be like? Would people notice the change in you? Would your family and friends see something new? Would your peers sense a difference? What about the less fortunate; would you treat them like you normally do? How about your friends; would they detect more joy? How about your enemies; would they receive more grace and mercy? And how would it effect you personally; your mood swings, your temper? Would you sleep better? Would you view life and death differently? Any chance you'd need fewer aspirins or sedatives? How about your reactions to traffic delays; when a promise is broken or when people don't do what you want them to do? Would you still dread what you are dreading or better yet, still do what you are doing? Pause and think about your schedule, obligations, engagements, outings and appointments. With Jesus fully in control, would any of those have to change? Keep working on this for a moment. Adjust the lens of your imagination until you have a clear picture of Jesus leading your life, then snap the shutter and frame the image, What you see is what God wants!" "Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus." If you are committed to live this way for a year, maybe for a month, or even for a week, you would be a transformed person. So my challenge is simple-just try it for one day-TODAY! You really can't fail-God will richly bless your success and readily forgive all your failures. THAT'S TRANSFORMATION! THAT'S RESOLUTION!

WHAT IS THE SHOP FOR POP PROGRAM?
SHOP FOR POP is an essential PTF fundraiser/gift card program in which retailers sell gift cards to POPCS at a 2% to 13% discount. Families buy these cards at face value and redeem them at face value. POPCS gets the difference in revenue. Just purchase the gift cards from the school to use at a favorite store or restaurant. Money earned is donated to the school for special projects. Past earnings have been used to fund bleachers and lights for the football field, as well as the current cafeteria campaign.
HOW TO ORDER SHOP FOR POP
ORDER IN-PERSON:
A selection of Shop for POP's top-selling cards is available for immediate purchase at the Shop for POP table during morning drop off. The table is located at the bottom of the steps in the Fine Arts Auditorium foyer.
ORDER ONLINE

SHOP FOR POP GIFT CERTIFICATES
Shop for POP Gift Certificates can be redeemed for any cards available. They can be purchased in any denomination and are great gifts for your favorite teacher!
