CHARISM Grocery Assistance Program named Five Star Food Pantry

Award among highest honors given by the Great Plains Food Bank

The Great Plains Food Bank recently presented the CHARISM Grocery Assistance Program (GAP) with the Five-Star Food Pantry award that recognizes agencies that go above and beyond to meet the food needs of their communities.

CHARISM GAP distributed 232,934 meals in 2018 alone and has distributed a total of 1.2 million meals since the program started in 2000. It is the first time since 2014 a Great Plains Food Bank partner food pantry, shelter or soup kitchen has been given this honor.

Client spotlight: Lessons in overcoming adversity

Medical issues currently prevent William Andrews, commonly known as "Willy," from working. Money became tight for his family of four when he suffered a stroke and they desperately needed means to supplement the loss of income.

He found food assistance through the Great Plains Food Bank's network of partner food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens to fill a critical void.

HUNGER RELIEF HEADLINES

Historic day of giving for hunger relief

Thanks to YOU, this Giving Hearts Day became the single largest giving day in the history of the Great Plains Food Bank. Your incredible support allowed us to raise an unprecedented $315,000 on February 14, which was enough to supply 945,000 meals to help those in need.

Garden Project passes big marks in 2018

First launched in 2010 by the N.D. Department of Agriculture in partnership with the Great Plains Food Bank, the Hunger Free ND Garden Project has now donated 2.8 million pounds of produce to help feed hungry individuals across the state. That includes more than 500,000 pounds donated in 2018 alone.

Hornbacher's donates more than $50,000

Through their annual Feed Hope campaign, Hornbacher's made another substantial commitment in the fight to end hunger with a donation of $52,985. That is enough to supply nearly 159,000 meals to help hungry children, seniors and families across North Dakota and western Minnesota.

Volunteer Month

The entire month of April is Volunteer Appreciation Month. At the Great Plains Food Bank our 5,500 incredible volunteers provide more than 20,000 hours annually.

Food distributions

The Great Plains Food Bank will be hosting a number of Mobile Food Pantry and Pop-up Perishable Food Program distributions in rural communities all spring long.

Stamp Out Hunger

The largest single day food drive in the world, the 27th annual Letter Carrier's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place May 11. The food drive has collected more than 1 billion pounds of food since 1993.
