Bits and Pieces

September 3, 2024

The last of the Rusty Barn Shows for our area are now over for this year! It was a good show at WestWorld, and it seemed that we all had more elbow-room at the venue. As always, I had a blast talking with you who attended as I demonstrated the True Cut Cutting tools from Grace. Thanks also to all of you who stopped by to chime in that you had previously purchased the ruler/cutter set with a tracking system to say to others just how much you liked the system, and how it did what it was designed to do. It’s always better when people hear those things directly from you, and not just me. Plus, I had a chance to work with some people who had forgotten exactly how to hold the ergonomic cutter for best results. Not properly held, it won’t properly work!

When the show was over, a few of us spent the next two days recuperating from the pace, the talking, the energy! I didn’t leave my house/couch for the most part!!! My personal thanks to the crew here at SVQ who did so much this past week to make the show a success….couldn’t have done it without all of you pitching in! And Lynn and Jan continued to work hard after the show to get the shop back in shape and looking whole again. Just think---in January we get to do it all again!!!

Our next Big Thing: The Shop Hop for Maricopa County! We are currently selling passports ($10 each), and getting geared up for our individual shop demos and our shop samples of the free quilt pattern parts that you will be given. The Shop Hop begins Oct. 11, and runs through the 19, and there are 9 participating shops. Prizes, should you be so lucky, are once again BIG GIFTS from us shops, including a free BERNINA machine, gift certificates, huge gift baskets. Lots of opportunities to win, but just participating with us makes you feel like a winner!!! It’s fun, each shop presents a different flavor, a different product to introduce you to, different snacks, different pieces of the total quilt pattern we had made just for you, etc. etc. etc. Passports are selling quickly this year, so get yours now because Oct. 11 is quickly approaching!

Want to attend Shop Hop but don’t know how to quilt? We can help with that also. This Friday, Sat., and Sunday, Andi is here teaching beginning quilting. We named the class JumpStart, since the class is designed to jumpstart you into the wide and fascinating world of quilting. Once you learn the basics from this class, and you’ve started and finished a small quilt in the class, you’ll be off and running. There are so many avenues to explore, techniques to try……but first you have to learn the basics. You will have a quilt you made to refer to, to show off and be proud of, to learn from and expand upon. Now is the time, and when you then join us for Shop Hop, many of the demos and techniques shown to you will make sense to you. You have to start somewhere and sometime: why not HERE and NOW???? Call now to get signed up for this week.

A reminder of Bags Camp this week Wed. and Thursday. It’s a bag of choice for you: one that you’ve started or a new one to start. We now have in the Sidekick pattern for a bag designed to fit over the front of a walker or on a wheelchair! I love this pattern and idea, since the bag is hands-free, and can hold many necessary things like water, snacks, socks, paper/pen, exercise bands, whatever. Anything to save the caregiver from making so many trips back and forth for things. In addition, we have a pattern for a Simple Quilted Hug, a shawl type of blanket which can be made to match the Sidekick bag. It’s easy to make, looks good, provides some warmth without being bulky or hard to get on/off. This is from the designs I told you about a few months back. The fabric designer was a very young patient at St. Jude’s Hospital, Quilter’s Treasure produced the girl’s designs and allowed a portion of the profits from the fabric to be donated back to St. Jude’s Hospital. It’s an Everyone-Helping-Everyone story, so please check it out and see what bright and happy colors and designs the young girl chose to brighten a day!!! The fabric is placed next to both the bag and the shawl, or just ask us. It would be a great project for you to make for yourself, someone you know or a charity event to sell or gift.

Be sure to check out Katie W.’s new class on Friday, Sept 13 9:30-4. It’s titled “In the Big Woods”, and it finishes at 70 x 70 and includes two alternate layouts for more variety! Sample is in the classroom and is fat quarter friendly, but pick up your pattern before class starts so you can read through the pattern first and decide on your layout. It could be a great one for using your scraps, or it can be more carefully controlled in design. The choice is yours! It’s only $50, and Katie is a great teacher, so come and join us!!!

One last thing: as a send off to the Rusty Barn Show, I will continue to offer 25% off on our kits, now positioned up front and close for you in addition to those on the kit shelves. We have some really wide selections for you, from religious, to Halloweenie, to summer, to Christmas, to tablerunner, to southwestern, to whatever might catch your fancy. Out of towners? Check out the website for what we have available, and give us a code of KITS25 to claim your discount. As always, if you need/want ANY help selecting fabrics for, say, a three yard quilt, we’ll all be happy to help you make the selection that you’re thrilled with. Choosing the fabric is my very favorite part of making a quilt, and we’ll stay with you until you can say the same thing about your fabric choices. Hope to see you soon!!!!
