Florida Legislative Committee Meetings Begin in September and Legislative Delegation Meetings Are Being Scheduled Now

B.1.   Early 2020 Florida Legislative Session:   The 2020 Florida Legislative Session  is from January 14 through March 13.  

B.2.   Florida Legislative Committee Meetings begin in September 2019 and will be held each month up until the 2020 Florida Legislative Session begins on January 14.

B.3.  The 2020-21 ranked DOS DCA recommended matching-grant lists will probably be released by the Secretary of State in October after the Florida Council on Arts and Culture meet on October 2 & 3 in Sarasota.  At this meeting, the Council will review Cultural Facilities' grant applications and approve the 2019 DCA panels' recommendations for 2020-21 matching grants.

B.4.   Arts & Culture Day 2020 in Tallahassee is January 22.  Mark your calendars now and plan to participate.

B.5.  Continue  to learn about your state legislators and engage your board and staff with them and their staff. 
Build relationships  and greater understanding about the value of DOS DCA matching grants with  your legislators.    Engage them and their staff in your local arts, arts education, and cultural programs, events, and services.  Here is contact information on those legislators who represent your county -- download and locate your county's Excel worksheet.  

Federal Arts and Culture Issues

C.1.   Participate in Americans for the Arts (AFTA) August Arts Advocacy Challenge --  a  five-week challenge to encourage grassroots advocates to take action on five different items throughout August with their members of Congress:

#1:  Cosponsor the CREATE Act of 2019 (S. 650 and H.R.1519)
#2.  Cosponsor the STAR ActSaving Transit Art Resources Act ( H.R. 3437)
#3.  Cosponsor the RISE From Trauma Act ( S. 1770)
#4.  Ensure increased appropriations in the VA/DoD appropriations bill
#5.  Cosponsor the Performing Artist Tax Parity Act of 2019   (H.R. 3121): Legislation to update the Qualified Performing Artist (QPA) tax -- Florida U.S. Representative Vern Buchanan and California Representative Judy Chu introduced this bill on June 5.

AFTA is creating an infographic that describes these bills for easy reference and use during this August Challenge.  Once it's available, FCA will share with you.

C.3.  Florida's two-pager  used during the National Arts Action Summit with links to other arts/cultural-related federal issues.

C.4.    $167.5 million approved by House for the National Endowment for the Arts; Senate has not taken up appropriation issues.  FY 2020 appropriations are still very much in play.                                 


D.1.  National Arts Education Week is September 8 - 14, 2019

Details and materials  to use to engage in and promote arts education.    Florida's DRAFT proclamation that will be submitted to Governor DeSantis by the Florida Alliance for Arts Education.  We hope the governor will approve and issue this important proclamation that we can all use throughout the state.
