Shocker Neighborhood Coalition celebrates second 5K Walk/Run

The Shocker Neighborhood Coalition - which is comprised of neighborhoods hugging the WSU campus - came together early Saturday morning to cheer on more than 110 intrepid runners and walkers who participated in the second Shocker Neighborhood 5K Walk/Run.

The event brought together faithful Shocker Walkers, Shocker Neighborhood communities and WSU campus leaders.

Among the race participants were those ranging in age from 10 to 74, members of Greek sororities and fraternities, campus and community leaders including Brandon Johnson, Wichita District I City Council Member; Dr. Rick Muma, WSU Provost and Professor ; Dr. Marché  Fleming-Randle, WSU VP for Diversity and Community Engagement; and Kaye Monk-Morgan, WSU Assistant VP for Academic Affairs.

The Shocker Neighborhood Coalition hosted the 5K Walk/Run as a continuation of its promotion of healthy lifestyles. The 5K was preceded by walking sessions led by fitness instructor Denise Colborn of Colborn Fitness. These activities created a healthy lifestyle choice for Shocker Walkers and helped them train for the 5k Walk/Run. The fastest participant completed the race in 17:59, with the final participant finishing at the 1:08 mark.

With community members on the sidelines cheering participants on, we were excited to see them all cross the finish line and meet their goals.

The walking sessions will continue through August 22 - meeting on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. All are welcome to join the Shocker Neighborhood Coalition's commitment to creating and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

We couldn't do this work without the support of our sponsor, the Kansas Health Foundation, as well as those sponsors of the 5K Walk/Run. Our sponsors for the 5K included HealthCore Clinic and the City of Wichita. In addition, we also had great partners who assisted with the 5K - WSU's Army ROTC, WSU's Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, community bikers and KAKE News.

HealthCore Clinic provided food and water for 5K participants and KAKE News anchor Alyson Acklin served as emcee.

Thank you for your continued support of the Shocker Neighborhood Coalition. We hope to see you at one of our walking sessions!

Members of Women in
Public Service spend time volunteering at ICT SOS

Women in Public Service offers members a chance to serve alongside each other once a year. This year we were excited to serve at ICTSOS by sorting/creating Clean Start Baskets for youth transitioning out of foster care and into college. These baskets included dish soap, laundry detergent and other items associated with moving out. We had a group of 12 volunteers sort and organize baskets.
