County, City Clerks attend professional development events

More than 50 county clerks and election officials from across Kansas joined the Public Policy and Management Center in Wichita from March 5-6 for professional development through the Sanborn Master Academy. Completing 12 hours of professional development, they focused on ethics, relationships and communicating trust. As part of the focus on ethics, the documentary "All the Queen's Horses" was viewed and discussed. The conference's closing speaker was Wendy Hummel, Wellness Coordinator for the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office, who shared techniques to recover quickly from difficulties. Through Resiliency Training, the County Clerks in attendance learned how to enhance quality of life and decrease stress and anxiety.
 
The following week, about 120 city clerks from across Kansas joined PPMC staff in Manhattan, Kan., for the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association's 70th Annual Spring Conference from March 11-13. They participated in 16 hours of continuing education with sessions on Community Improvement Districts, Marijuana, Human Resources, Leadership and Finance. Keynote speaker was Dan Oblinger - a hostage negotiator, author, international keynote speaker and founder of Leadercraft - who shared his experiences on "Listening from the Ledge." This year, the conference was pleased to host Dr. Jane Long, Professional Development Manager from the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, who swore in the Association's newly elected officers.
 
The PPMC is proud to work alongside these dedicated public servants and to be part of the work being done by members of the Kansas County Clerks and Election Officers Association and the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association of Kansas.
PPMC's Lisa Dodson travels
to Washington, D.C. for Museums Advocacy Day  

Lisa Dodson, Research and Program Evaluation Manager at the Public Policy and Management Center - who also serves as the executive director of the Kansas Museums Association - attended The American Alliance of Museums Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C., Feb. 24-25 along with museum advocates from across Kansas and the nation.   
 
Kansas advocates met with staff for the two Kansas senators and the four district representatives. Advocates were making the case that museums are economic engines, supporting 726,000 jobs and generating $50 billion in economic activity and $12 billion in tax revenues per year.
 
Advocates also underscored that 95 percent of voters would approve of lawmakers who support museums and 96 percent want federal funding for museums maintained or increased.
PPMC's LaShonda Garnes joins Sedgwick County Corrections Advisory Board   

On Feb. 19, the Public Policy and Management Center's Community Development Manager LaShonda Garnes was sworn in at the Sedgwick County Commission meeting to serve on the Sedgwick County Corrections Advisory Board. 

The Board actively participates in the formulation of the comprehensive plan for the development, implementation and operation of corrections services funded through the Community Corrections Act.
 
"I am honored for the opportunity to serve on the Sedgwick County Corrections Advisory Board," says Garnes. "I look forward to learning and sharing my experience with the board and positively influencing the decisions and programs designed to impact those in our community."
