Fraternal Order of Police Meeting at PPOA

June 13: The quarterly meeting for the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), Los Angeles County Lodge 1, was hosted in the PPOA conference center last Saturday. President Steve Johnson and Intake Representative Kevin Thompson attended on behalf of PPOA.

All active PPOA members are California State FOP Lodge 1 members — this provides PPOA members with workplace legal protections through the FOP Legal Defense Plan. The LA County Lodge is one of more than 30 lodges in the statewide organization.

LA County Federation 'House of Labor' Meeting

June 15: PPOA President Steve Johnson joined fellow Los Angeles County Federation of Labor members on Monday evening for the monthly House of Labor meeting. These meetings are centered on discussions about the many issues impacting union members in the County workforce. The Federation of Labor includes more than 300 unions and represents more than 800,000 members.

Meet and Confer re: Outsourcing Blood Alcohol Testing

June 16: PPOA began the meet and confer process with executives from the Department and Scientific Services Bureau regarding a proposal to temporarily outsource blood alcohol testing. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Steve Johnson, Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. and union legal counsel. Another meeting will be scheduled.

Star and Shield Foundation Board of Directors Meeting

June 17: The monthly Board of Directors meeting for the Star & Shield Foundation was hosted on Wednesday. The Foundation was established by PPOA members in 2001 and has proudly raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for worthy organizations and charitable causes — including its most critical mission to provide ongoing support for families of fallen officers.

Meeting participants included Foundation Directors Steve Johnson, Rob Weber, Joyce Kato, and Members-at-Large Kevin Thompson and Margarita Turpen.

PPOA Unit 612 Contract Negotiations

June 17: PPOA members on the Unit 612 contract negotiations team met with representatives from the County of Los Angeles, the Sheriff's Department, and the District Attorney’s Office in the PPOA conference center on Wednesday for the 26th round of contract bargaining.

Meet and Confer re: Reorganization of the Communications and Fleet Management Bureau Reorganization (CFMB)

June 18: PPOA representatives met with LASD and CEO executives regarding the Department’s transition to a centralized Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. The meeting was a review of the Department’s overall plans to begin the first phase of the transition. There was no definitive information, and another meeting will be scheduled. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Steve Johnson, Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. and union legal counsel.

Juneteenth: Los Angeles County Holiday

June 19: Juneteenth was negotiated in 2021 as a paid holiday for Los Angeles County employees by PPOA and our fellow labor unions in the Coalition of County Unions.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas on June 19, 1865, when, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the Emancipation Proclamation. The celebrations that followed the reading of the proclamation began a tradition that has carried on for more than 150 years. Click here for more info about this significant date.

Fraternal Order of Police News Update

PPOA members have long benefitted from our affiliation with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 374,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide. All active PPOA members are part of California FOP Lodge 1.

Important update re: FOP membership for retired PPOA members

When a sworn PPOA member retires and wishes to reactivate his/her FOP member benefits, the following step must be taken: To reactivate your membership as a retired peace officer, you will need to pay FOP annual dues of $48. To do so, please send an email to the FOP Lodge 1 Secretary at wmwestermann@sbcglobal.net
