Welcoming Custody Assistant Class #114

October 21: PPOA representatives met with 22 newly-hired Custody Assistants at Biscailuz Center during their first day of orientation. 2nd Vice President/Custody Assistant Tony Coleman, President Steve Johnson, Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. and Labor Representative Dave Ladjevic were on hand to welcome C.A. Class #114 as new members of PPOA.

Board Election Ballots Mailed to Custody Assistants

October 21: Board election ballots and candidate statements were mailed on Monday to PPOA members who are Custody Assistants. The statements and election details can also be found in the October 2024 issue of Star & Shield magazine.

LA County Federation 'House of Labor' Meeting

October 21: Los Angeles County Federation of Labor members, including PPOA President Steve Johnson, gathered on Monday evening for the monthly House of Labor meeting. These sessions provide County union leaders with an opportunity to compare notes and analyze ongoing issues impacting public employees throughout the County.

 

The County Federation of Labor includes more than 300 unions, representing more than 800,000 members.

Memorial Service for Retired PPOA Member

October 22: Family, friends and colleagues of retired Sergeant Joseph A. Acevedo paid final respects to the 34-year LASD veteran on Tuesday. Acevedo was 60 years old when he passed on October 5, 2024. His last assignment before retiring in March 2020 was Emergency Operations Bureau, Bomb Squad.


President Steve Johnson attended the memorial service on behalf of PPOA.

Support for LASD Personnel at SRT Training

October 23: President Steve Johnson and PPOA staff members were proud to team up with ALADS to provide a freshly grilled lunch for hundreds of LASD personnel and counterparts from neighboring agencies during Sheriff's Response Team training in Long Beach.

Carson Sheriff's Station 50th Anniversary

October 23: Past and present Carson Station personnel were joined by dignitaries and supporters to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the station. The festivities included the dedication of a commemorative wall that "stands as a tribute to the men and women who has served with distinction over the past five decades." Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. attended this meaningful event on behalf of PPOA.

Meet and Confer re: Nepotism

October 24: PPOA representatives met with LASD executives regarding the addition of MPP 3-02/010.06, Nepotism Policy, and the rescinding of sections 3-01/075.00, Personal Relationships Between Department Members and 3-02/010.05, Relatives Assigned to the Same Unit. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled for the proposed editions. Meeting participants from PPOA included President Steve Johnson, Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. and union legal counsel.

Notice Emailed to Custody Assistants re: CRDF Vacation Sign-Ups

October 25: PPOA 2nd Vice President Tony Coleman emailed a notice to his fellow Custody Assistants regarding concerns with CRDF vacation sign-ups. Click here to read that message.

Unit 612 Training Committee Meeting

October 25: Members of the committee held a videoconference to discuss effective means of utilizing the Training Fund to advance the skills and knowledge of sergeants and lieutenant as supervisors. Meeting participants included the Committee Chairman/1st Vice President Jay Chapman, President Steve Johnson, Board Members Walter Arcos and Kevin Ahsmuhs and Unit 612 Members Jason Hosch, Oscar Rodriguez and John Strosnider.






Fundraiser for Widows and Orphans Fund

October 25: President Steve Johnson was proud to attend and support a fundraiser last night for the Santa Ana Police Officers Association Widows and Orphans fund.

Fraternal Order of Police News Update

PPOA members have long benefitted from our affiliation with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 374,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide. All active PPOA members are part of California FOP Lodge 1.


Important update re: FOP membership for retired PPOA members 

When a sworn PPOA member retires and wishes to reactivate his/her FOP member benefits, the following step must be taken: To reactivate your membership as a retired peace officer, you will need to pay FOP annual dues of $40 for 2024. To do so, please send an email to the FOP Lodge 1 Secretary at wmwestermann@sbcglobal.net
