PPOA representatives have been firming up details on a number of upcoming events and projects. We encourage PPOA members to note the following:

Baker-to-Vegas BBQ
PPOA will be co-hosting this event with LASD Homicide Bureau and ALADS on Sunday, April 2nd at the Sunset Parkway Business Center (3301 W. Martin Ave.) in Las Vegas. Our friends from Homicide Bureau have been putting on a fantastic event for years and we look forward to partnering with them to ensure this is a memorable afternoon for all in attendance. LASD Retiree Roundup Cigar Night
PPOA will host Cigar Night on Tuesday, April 4th during the LASD Retiree Roundup in Laughlin. If you're planning to attend the Roundup, please join us poolside on the patio at the Riverside Resort to light up a stick, watch the sunset and catch up with friends. This Cigar Night event is limited to the first 200 retirees who register. To do so, please send email with your full name to moon5252@gmail.com.

College Scholarships
PPOA is proud to announce 12 scholarships worth $13,500 total will be available to help further education for PPOA members and their sons and daughters. Applications will be posted at PPOA.COM by April 1st and will need to be submitted by May 12th.

15th Annual Peace Officer Memorial Golf Tournament
PPOA is honored to once again bring together nearly 200 law enforcement personnel, supporters, volunteers and sponsors for our Peace Officer Memorial Golf Tournament on June 5th. This event will be hosted at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier. The golf tournament is the most significant fundraiser for PPOA's Star & Shield Foundation and its mission to support fallen officers and their families. Click here for details and registration.
News Update Emailed to Custody Assistants
February 21: PPOA 2nd Vice President Tony Coleman emailed updates on several issues to PPOA members who are Custody Assistants. Topics included staffing, CARPing and more.
Meeting with Los Angeles County Supervisor
February 22: President Nancy Escobedo met with Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis and her staff to discuss public safety concerns and support for first responders. Supervisor Solis represents the 1st District and previously served as the U.S. Secretary of Labor and in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Star & Shield Foundation Board Meeting
February 22: The monthly Board of Directors meeting for the Star & Shield Foundation was hosted on Wednesday. Established in 2001, the Foundation has proudly raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for worthy organizations and causes — including its most important mission to provide support for families of fallen officers.
 
Meeting participants included Foundation Directors Nancy Escobedo, Tony Coleman, Joyce Kato, Christopher Lee, Kevin Thompson, and Margarita Turpen. Guests included Julie Sherman and Aaron Straussner (from the firm of Straussner • Sherman • Lonne • Treger • Helquist) as well as Gold Lee (from the firm of Lewis, Marenstein, Wicke, Sherwin and Lee.)
Civilian Oversight Commission Set to Host Virtual Conference re: LASD Budget Priorities and Unmet Needs
On Thursday, March 2, the Civilian Oversight Commission for the LA County Sheriff’s Department is hosting a virtual conference to discuss the Sheriff Department's Budget Priorities & Unmet Needs for Fiscal Year 2023-2024. This conference begins at 9:00AM and will bring together County leaders, law enforcement professionals, community partners, academics and members of the public to discuss the County's budget process as well as the Sheriff Department's budget priorities and unmet needs. The ultimate budget decisions rest with the Board of Supervisors.

Speakers will include:
  • Jamon Hicks, Civilian Oversight Commission member & Budget Ad Hoc Committee member
  • Sheila Williams, Senior Manager, L.A. County Chief Executive Office 
  • Jill Torres, Assistant Sheriff and Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department
  • Melanie Ochoa, Police Practices Director, ACLU of Southern California

Fraternal Order of Police News Update
PPOA members have long benefitted from our longtime affiliation with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), the world's largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 364,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide. All active PPOA members are part of California FOP Lodge 1.

Important news regarding FOP membership for retired PPOA members: When a sworn PPOA member retires and wishes to reactivate his/her FOP member benefits, the following step must be taken:
 
To reactivate your membership as a retired peace officer, you will need to pay FOP annual dues of $40 for 2023. To do so, please send an email to the FOP Lodge 1 Secretary: wmwestermann@sbcglobal.net. Be sure to include your full name and advise that you are a retired PPOA member requesting membership with FOP.
