End of Watch: January 17, 2023
We were sincerely saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of Forensic Identification Specialist II Ralph Chapman on January 17, 2023. The well-respected 22-year law enforcement veteran began his career with the Pasadena Police Department before joining the LASD Scientific Services Bureau in 2021. He is survived by his wife, 18-year old son and 15-year old daughter. PPOA expresses heartfelt condolences to the Chapman family at this very difficult time.
Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
January 16: Monday marked the annual holiday observed nationwide to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. — America's most compelling and effective civil rights leader. We are also profoundly grateful for Dr. King's powerful advocacy for labor unions and workers' rights.
COVID-19 Legal Meeting
January 17: PPOA reps took part in their weekly teleconference to discuss the continued impact of COVID-19 on our membership. Meeting participants included President Nancy Escobedo, Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr., Labor Rep. Teresa O'Neil, Intake Rep. Kevin Thompson and PPOA legal counsel.

LASD Academy Class 464 Fundraiser
January 18: PPOA was proud to attend and support the Class 464 fundraiser event hosted by Custody Division on Wednesday. This event featured tacos and raffle prizes at the MCJ Heroes Park. We were pleased to see Sheriff Luna in attendance and are thankful for the hard-working personnel who coordinated this worthy event.
California Peace Officer Memorial Foundation Meeting
January 19: Representatives of the California Peace Officers' Memorial Foundation (CPOMF) gathered for a meeting to discuss logistical planning for the 2023 memorial ceremonies on State Capitol grounds. The meeting was hosted by the Sacramento County Deputy Sheriffs' Association.

This year, the candlelight vigil will be held on Sunday, May 7th and the Enrollment Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 8th. The service and sacrifice of nine officers who died in the line of duty will be honored. Click here for more information about the California Peace Officer Memorial Foundation.
PPOA Golf Tournament Committee Meeting
January 20: Members of the Golf Tournament planning committee participated in a video conference to discuss details for PPOA's upcoming 15th Annual Peace Officer Memorial Golf Tournament.

This event will take place on Monday, June 5th at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier and proceeds will benefit the families of fallen officers. The golf tournament is the most significant fundraiser for PPOA's Star & Shield Foundation each year. Details and tournament registration will be available soon.

UPDATE — Important news regarding FOP membership for retired PPOA members:
When a sworn PPOA member retires and wishes to reactivate his/her FOP member benefits, the following step must be taken:
 
To reactivate your membership as a retired peace officer, you will need to pay FOP annual dues of $40 for 2023. To do so, please send an email to the FOP Lodge 1 Secretary: wmwestermann@sbcglobal.net. Be sure to include your full name and advise that you are a retired PPOA member requesting membership with FOP.
