Mourning the Loss of Sheriff's Security Officer Robert Ford
End of Watch: 5/1/22
PPOA was sincerely saddened to learn of the off-duty passing of Sheriff's Security Officer Robert Ford on Sunday. Officer Ford was assigned to Metropolitan Courthouse and had served the County for 27 years. He is survived by his two children.

We ask that you keep the Ford family in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

California Coalition of Law Enforcement Associations Meeting
April 30: Executive Director Wayne Quint Jr. joined fellow representatives of the Coalition of Law Enforcement Associations (CCLEA) for a meeting on Saturday to discuss issues impacting public safety personnel locally and statewide. This meeting was hosted by the Sacramento Deputy Sheriffs Association.

CCLEA is the state's largest law enforcement organization, representing more than 40 police associations and 150,000 peace officers. For more information, visit CCLEA.ORG


Fallen Officers Memorialized in Ceremony at State Capitol
May 1-2: PPOA representatives and law enforcement personnel from throughout the state joined families of fallen officers at the California Peace Officer Officers’ Memorial Ceremonies in Sacramento. The two-day event included a candlelight vigil, a memorial procession down the steps of the capitol and the enrollment ceremony, in which the names of fallen officers were formally added to the memorial monument. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled and all fallen officers who would have been honored at those ceremonies were memorialized during the enrollment ceremony on Monday (click here for full, updated list of honorees.) 

PPOA representatives in attendance included Board Treasurer Joyce Kato, Board Members Joel Barnett and Gerry Garcia, along with Executive Director Quint.


Meeting to Discuss Impact of COVID-19 on PPOA Members
May 3: PPOA representatives took part in their weekly teleconference to continue assessing the impact of COVID-19 on our membership.

Meeting participants from PPOA included President Tab Rhodes, Senior Labor Rep. Venise Wallace, Labor Rep. Teresa O'Neil, Intake Rep. Kevin Thompson and PPOA legal counsel.
Unit 621 Contract Negotiations
May 4: The PPOA Unit 621 contract negotiations team gathered in San Dimas on Wednesday for the second round of contract bargaining with County executives, who participated via video conference.

Unit 621 is the official bargaining unit for the following LASD classifications: Custody Assistant, Civilian Investigator, Crime Analyst, Public Response Dispatcher, Court Services Specialist, Law Enforcement Technician, Security Assistant, Security Officer.
LA County Unions United Meeting
May 4: Executive Director Quint participated in a teleconference on Wednesday with fellow labor leaders from unions throughout LA County to discuss the current status of contract bargaining for PPOA and other unions throughout the County. Unions United is composed of 15 AFL-CIO labor organizations and represents 85,000 LA County employees.
Fringe Benefits Negotiations
May 6: President Rhodes, Executive Director Quint and fellow Coalition of County Unions (CCU) representatives met with LA County executives via video conference for contract negotiations for a successor Fringe Benefits Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The current Fringe Benefits contract expired on March 31, 2022.
National Correctional Officers Week
Today marks the culmination of National Correctional Officers Week and we want to extend our gratitude to all Custody Assistants for their service and dedication.
 
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan issued Proclamation 5187, creating National Correctional Officers Week to acknowledge personnel who work in jails, prisons and custody facilities across the country.
 
Please join us in honoring the many contributions and accomplishments of hard-working Custody Assistants throughout the County.
PPOA 2022 Scholarship Applications Available Online
PPOA is once again proud to offer college scholarships to help further the education of PPOA members and their sons/daughters. Since the inception of this scholarship program, PPOA has been honored to contribute approximately $100,000 toward the educational goals of our members and dependents. Eligibility is limited to active, full dues-paying PPOA members and the biological children, stepchildren or adopted children of active full dues-paying PPOA members or retired PPOA members who were paying full dues prior to retired membership. Application deadline is May 13, 2022 at 5:00 pm.
