PRCC ALUMNI TO BE INDUCTED INTO MACJC HALL OF FAME

Jeffery Posey of Bassfield was an All-State star at Pearl River Community College from 1993-95, playing on two winning teams for Coach Willie Coats as an outside linebacker. At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, he wreaked havoc on opposing offenses with his quickness.
As a sophomore, he led the state with 14 sacks, accounted for 45 tackles, 29 assists, 17 hurries, three tackles for losses and a fumble recovery. As a result, he not only made the MACJC all-star first team, but he was also voted the most valuable player in the Mississippi JuCo All-Star game, which his South team won 20-6.
After earning his associate's degree at PRCC, he signed with the University of Southern Mississippi, where his on-field success continued under head coach Jeff Bower.
During his senior year, he started 11 games, made 7.5 sacks, had two forced fumbles, and made 16 tackles for a loss.  He recorded one of the top six all-time single season performances in school historyand was named the 1996 Defensive MVP.  He also received the Heart of the Eagle Award.
After his senior season, Jeff signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49'ers. He quickly became a special teams standout, earning recognition as one of the unit's leaders. While excelling on special teams, he also worked to become a force on defense with his pass-rushing skills. Recognizing his versatility, the coaches moved him to outside linebacker in 2000.
After adapting to his new position, he was named the starting strong outside linebacker for the 2000 season. During 2001, Jeff played for the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars where he contributed on special teams and defense.  In 2002, he signed a contract to play with the Houston Texans where he recorded 65 tackles, 8.5 sacks, one interception and 2 forced fumbles.
In 2003, Jeff signed a four-year contract with the Buffalo Bills, where he was privileged to be a part of one of the NFL's top-ranked defenses. Upon leaving Buffalo, Jeff signed with the Washington Redskins - capping a nine-year career in the NFL.
Jeff has also been called on to speak at PRCC Fellowship of Christian Athletes meetings about his life's experiences. He currently resides in Hattiesburg with his wife, Latalia, and their five children.

March 2016 Alumni Spotlight

Matthew Powell

PRCC and Beyond:  How Pearl River Community College helped shape the future of one Gulf Coast doctor.

In 2001 I got a call from Dr. Adam Breerwood offering a scholarship to attend PRCC.  He wasn't the vice-president of the school at the time but the men's soccer coach.  While I was excited about getting a scholarship offer, I had offers from other colleges that
needed to be considered.  After discussing all the options with my parents, and getting a personal visit from Coach Breerwood himself, the life changing decision was made...I became a Wildcat!
I took the basic classes that most freshman take and quickly learned that if I didn't put forth more effort, I wouldn't make the grades I was used to making. THIS was a big deal at the time!  I learned hard work and dedication from both academics and the soccer program through waking up at 6am to run, 2-a-days, late night practices and hours of studying.
The work ethic and positive attitude gained from PRCC now allows me to do what I love ...  helping others!  It's my goal to give back and help my community become more healthy, active and productive through chiropractic care.
Some of my best memories are from Pearl River.  It's the place I met my wife, where I attained my work ethic, where I played soccer and where I made lasting friendships. It was FUN!
Most of the lessons I attribute to Pearl River became apparent many years later. I truly believe my positive attitude and dedication to help others began when I stepped foot on PRCC campus and forever became a part of the Wildcat family!

PRCC FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF NEARLY COMPLETE

Pearl River Community College head football coach David Saunders is in the process of completing the staff for his first season at the Wildcats' helm.
The process has been slowed by the departure of defensive coordinator Derrick LeBlanc for a position at the University of North Texas, but Saunders likes the men he has on board for the 2016 season.
"This is a good group of coaches," Saunders' said. "We're real excited about what they are going to bring to Pearl River."
Saunders is still interviewing candidates for a vacant position on the defensive side of the ball, and he expects to have a candidate to present to the PRCC Board of Trustees for its March meeting.
The Wildcats will begin spring practice on March 21, and spring drills will continue through April 22.

LADY WILDCATS SPLIT CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST NORTHWEST

The Pearl River Community College softball team split an MACJC doubleheader Saturday against Northwest Mississippi Saturday at Wildcat Field.
The Lady Wildcats took the opener 5-2 behind Skyler Cook's one-hitter, but dropped the second game 7-5, as their seventh-inning rally fell short.
PRCC finished the day 12-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play. Northwest is 9-3 and 3-1.
Cook carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, and neither of the Rangers' runs were earned, as Pearl River committed four errors in the game. The Lady Wildcats also left 10 runners on base.
But PRCC was able to scratch across runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Bri Leonard's RBI double put Pearl River up in the first inning, and were gifted a run in the third when Brook Barnes scored on a wild pitch.
The Rangers cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth, but PRCC broke the game open with three runs in the sixth. Leonard drove in a run with a sacrifice fly after the Lady Wildcats loaded the bases, and Rachel Brockhaus followed with a two-run single.
Heath Griffith broke up Cook's no-hitter with a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, and Northwest scored another unearned run, but that was all of the damage for the Rangers.
Cook (7-3) struck out one and walked one; Tori Luke (5-2) took the loss for Northwest.
The Rangers jumped on Lady Wildcat starter Amanda Ingram (4-3) in the second game, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The big blow was a three-run home run by Hailee Kolwyck, and Kayla Andrada had a run-scoring single in the inning.
Pearl River got one run back on the third, when Branda Northrop reached on an error leading off, stole second, took third on a sacrifice and scored on a bunt by Brooke Barnes.
But the Rangers scored two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead. Northrop scored again in the fifth, with a leadoff double, a sacrifice and a sacrifice fly by Barnes, and the Lady Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it close.
Northrop led off with a single, and Brockhaus followed with a two-run, pinch-hit home run, giving her a team-high 21 RBIs for the season. Barnes reached on a single and scored on a one-out double by Kristen Martin. However, Martin was out at third and Alyssa Croncich grounded out to end the game.
Kolwyck (2-0) scattered nine hits to earn the victory for Northwest.
PRCC will be back home on Friday to take on Northeast in a 3 p.m. doubleheader, then hosts Coahoma next Sunday at 2 p.m.
