2021 Legislative Session: Way to go, Maine!
Maine's 130th legislative session saw an amazing amount of recovery, harm reduction, and justice wins this year. Eleven bills have been passed and enacted, and three more have seen progress even as they have not yet passed. In this newsletter, we're highlighting two bills: LD488 and LD1722.
LD488: Resolve, To Expand Recovery Community Organizations throughout Maine. This bill ensures that all Mainers have access to a recovery community center. In consideration of the 7 counties who currently do not have recovery community centers, this bill prioritizes establishing or developing centers in those counties, until every county has a center. Led by Senator Maxmin, this bill has been signed by Governor Mills, passed, and enacted.
LD1722: An Act To Ensure Access to All Paths to Recovery for Persons Affected by Opioids Using Money Obtained through Litigation against Opioid Manufacturers. This bill seeks to protect and strategically direct the millions of dollars awarded to Maine through national opioid litigation to ensure that: 1) funds are used to most effectively address and remediate the substance use crisis in Maine through prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery, and 2) key stakeholders knowledgeable about prevention, treatment and recovery, are involved in the ongoing planning and decision making on how, when and where to spend this money and reviewing outcomes for monies spent.

Supporting Recovery in the DOC
Did you know that PRCC's Hub provides recovery coach services to residents in correctional facilities?
PRCC's Recovery Hub coordinates the recovery program for all five of Maine's correctional facilities. Meet John Dalzell, PRCC's DOC Recovery Program Coordinator. A person in long-term recovery, John helps to ensure that any resident of a Maine correctional facility who is seeking support in their recovery journey receives reliable, peer-oriented care. DOC residents can not only receive recovery coaching, but they can also become recovery coaches themselves. Since 2020, 40 DOC residents have been trained as recovery coaches, and 25 remain actively coaching while receiving ongoing monthly supervision from PRCC's Recovery Coach Coordinator. This program also supports residents in their release and reentry process by connecting them with any of Maine's sixteen recovery community centers. Thank you, John and everyone at DOC for the important work you are doing, and thank you to all of the recovery coaches in correctional facilities!

September is National Recovery Month, and Maine is celebrating!
September is Recovery Month, a national observance held every September to educate Americans about substance use disorder and show that it is possible to recover and live healthy and rewarding lives.
Recovery Month celebrates the gains made by those in recovery and spreads the message of hope to others.
This year’s theme is "Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community."
There are so many amazing events happening around Maine to honor recovery this month. Check out this flyer we've put together to find an event near you. These events are family friendly and organized by people in recovery, allies, friends, and families.
Wherever you are, we hope you take full advantage of this special time of year to connect, learn, and celebrate all things recovery.
The message is hope, and we are here to celebrate recovery.
