2 001 Xavier Vignon "Ange" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Southern Rhône, France
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had the opportunity to taste this wine at an event in New York earlier this year. It absolutely blew us away.
The 2001 Ange is ridiculously fresh, showing no signs of aging. Vibrant colors are matched with bright aromas and dense, classic CdP flavors. How can a nearly 20-year-old wine taste this youthful? Well, that is due to some Xavier magic!
Xavier's son, Ange, was born in 2001. For the next nine years, Xavier utilized his extensive contacts to gather up premium lots of 2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. He held the wine in tanks until blending it in 2010. At that point, the wine was put into specially fabricated barrels that were submerged inside stainless steel tanks of regular Châteauneuf, providing a completely oxygen-free environment.
The wine remained in those barrels for nine years before being bottled last year on Ange's 18th birthday. The result of this unusual technique is a beautifully complex 2001 with the freshness and youthfulness of a wine 10 years younger. It is fearless, brilliant, and devastatingly delicious!
"Blended in 2010 and bottle in 2019, aged in barrels always submerged in wine, the 2001 Châteauneuf Du Pape Ange sports a still youthful ruby color as well as a beautiful bouquet of cured meats, ground pepper, tobacco, white truffle, and spice. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and beautifully textured, it's multi-dimensional, layered, and elegant, with a Bonneau-like complexity and style. This is a thrilling wine."
Magnums of the Xavier Vignon 1972 Châteauneuf-du-Pape!
1972 Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Southern Rhône, France
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back in February, we offered you this epic dose of 1972 magic from Xavier in 750ml bottles. Today, this extraordinary wine is back for a pre-arrival offer in 1.5-liter Magnums!

As a refresher, here's the story...

The longtime proprietor of a prestigious Châteauf-du-Pape estate passed away shortly after making the 1972 vintage. His sons were so respectful of this final wine made by their father that they could not get themselves to put it all into bottle. They left a portion of the vintage in concrete tank. For over 45 years it sat, untouched.

The sons have now all retired and the grandchildren are in charge. They were uncertain as to what to do with the estate and decided to sell off some of the old cuvées. They allowed Xavier to taste the 1972. He loved it and bought the entire tank.

He bottled the wine earlier this year. In February, we were the first to offer it in regular size bottles. Today, we have a limited supply in 1.5 liter magnum bottles!

Supply, as you would expect for a 48 year-old wine, is very limited. Get these big bottles while you can!
