PRE-K UPDATE
JANUARY 21, 2021
The Long Island Pre-K Initiative is proud to be part of Long Island's Regional Technical Assistance Center for Pre-K and Early Education (LI-RTAC). Visit its web page for links to all partner organizations. Many have important COVID-19-related resources to offer:  www.nassauboces.org/rtac

Are you ready for World Read Aloud Day?

This annual observance is two weeks away--February 3, 2021--and it's dedicated to the idea that storytelling creates connections among people and communities. What's
more, Read Aloud Day is an opportunity to support diverse stories and authors. The organizers at the nonprofit LitWorld remind us that "Nearly three quarters of all children's and young adult books published in 2019 were about white children, animals or inanimate objects."

If you want to take part--or if you are just looking for tips on storytelling or helpful book lists, you can visit the LitWorld website. For example, you can download directions in English or Spanish for story telling games like "Story in the Round" (each person adds a sentence to the story) or "It Happened to Me" (children share small, but important, life moments such as a time they were incredibly happy). YOUR CLASSROOM
New brochures from NYSED for parents of Emergent Multilingual Learners entering Pre-K
Starting Pre-K is an exciting time--but can come with many questions and concerns for parents who do not speak English at home. That's why the New York State Education Department (NYSED) has just made available a downloadable brochure you can use with families--and it's available in 11 different languages, including
Asian father_ mother and daughter doing home work togather in living room_ this immage can use for education_ home and family concept
Spanish, Haitian-Creole, Chinese and Urdu.

The brochure was developed by Zoila Morell, an Associate Professor, Early Childhood Education, at Lehman College in the Bronx. She supports preserving bilingualism, and notes that "the brochure tries to deliver a strong message about preserving the home language."

For example, it points out that "knowing more than one language is an advantage," while also alerting parents that children may use words in multiple languages to express themselves."Sometimes they will combine languages as they speak, but this is not a sign of confusion." Click here to download one or all of the brochures and to learn more about NYSED protocols for Emergent Multilingual Learners.
AWARENESS AND ADVOCACY
New video shares stories from child care providers who are dedicated, but struggling
"We are essential workers, but I don't feel we get the essential funds that we need in
order to exist and be successful." So says Alicia Marks from Marks of Excellence Childcare Learning Center in Amityville. She's one of six New York providers who share their stories in a new video from the advocacy group, Empire State Campaign for Child Care.

"They share their passion and drive for their work, as well as the struggles they have faced trying to meet the needs of families and keep their doors open during the pandemic," says the campaign, which is encouraging parents and providers to share their stories as part of this year's Early Childhood Advocacy Day on February 2, 2021. SUMMER INSTITUTE
Teachers: we want you to be a part of our Summer Institute this year--here's how
For 2021, we're planning a Summer Institute that will kick off with a keynote webinar on June 30, and continue through July and August with weekly online webinars on a variety of early education topics. We know from the evaluations of last year's sold-out series that you are eager to learn from each other--and we're asking you to share your classroom expertise. For example:
  • Have you created new lessons using online resources? What strategies were successful? What did you learn?
  • How do you work with students for whom English is a new language?
  • What new outdoor games have you found that worked for you?
These are just a few of the possibilities. Please consider submitting a proposal to share your practice. You can present by yourself, with a team, or as a panel. The online. proposal form is easy to complete. Click here to start.
