What does it mean to be the church in a climate-changed world? How can preachers embrace an approach to sermons that nurtures biblical, theological, and ecological imagination? 

Moderated by Rev. Dr. Leah Schade, LTS Associate Professor of Preaching and Worship, this Earth Week Webinar is made possible by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion (DoSER) through their Climate Science in Theological Education grant.

We will begin with climate scientist Carlos Martinez sharing the latest in climate research. He will also discuss what the acceleration of the planetary crisis will mean for congregations that often minister to those affected by climate-related catastrophes (and are often affected by disasters themselves).

Dr. Esther Parajuli, LTS Assistant Professor of Christian Theology, will then use an ecotheological lens to provide participants with framing around the themes of theodicy (the relationship between God and suffering in a climate-changed world) and ecclesiology (the role of the church in a climate-changed world) that preachers can utilize in their sermons.

Finally, Dr. Jerry Sumney, LTS Professor of Biblical Studies, will lead participants in examining upcoming lectionary texts in dialogue with climate science and ecotheology to suggest entry points and ideas for preaching.

The webinar is free and open to the public. We encourage clergy, lay preachers, seminarians, Bible study leaders, and anyone who seeks connections between Scripture, theology, and environmental issues to attend.
