It has been a very busy first quarter of 2025! The first 2 months of the year, we had the pleasure of having 2 energetic and driven interns from the Washington State University College of Nursing. They were here every Tuesday for 8 weeks, and in the middle of February they co-taught our Baby Care 101 class, under the supervision of a staff member. This was such a great experience for everyone! The class served parents, who were either pregnant or parenting an infant. All of them were eager to learn information on best practices and tips in caring for their little ones.

The week following Baby Care 101, we hosted our semi-annual Community Baby Shower Brunch. This was a fun time of celebrating new parents and their babies as a community with a beautiful brunch, baby shower game, raffle prizes and a craft. Each parent went through the layette station to create a layette for their baby as well. We are grateful to Akin, who joined our baby shower as our community partner highlight. Also we are are very thankful for the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Daughters from Assumption Parish, who organized a baby item drive for the baby shower.

Many moms and dads go without ever having a baby shower because they may not have family or friends with the means to host a party, or parents may be new to the area and do not have the support system established here. These community baby showers are very special to these families, thank you for your support in helping these parents and new babies be celebrated!

PREPARES Family Center has also been very deep in providing programming including Music Together, Play with Love Playgroup, Circle of Security Parenting, and Prepared Moms. We will be offering Toddler Care 202 in mid-May, so please call or check our social media for registration info soon. For additional info on these offerings, please check out the flyers on the links below or the 2nd page of the monthly activities calendar.

Youth Highlight

(Pictured top: Sacred Heart Parish Youth Group. Bottom left Girl Scouts from St. Mary's Catholic School and Bottom right, Boy Scouts from St. Mary's Catholic School. )

PREPARES Family Center and PREPARES Ministry is blessed to have youth from various Catholic Schools, as well as youth and scouting groups; pour their time, energy and talents into serving vulnerable families.

Girl and Boy Scout groups from St. Mary's Catholic School helped gather essential baby care items through donation drives where they collected and organized goods to donate to the families we serve. Baby wash, diaper cream, diapers and wipes, pacifiers, bottles, along with clothing and other items are always in high demand. We are so grateful for their hard work in organizing the donation drives for Lamb's Closet, a PREPARES Ministry location located at St. Mary's Parish in Spokane Valley.

Recently we had Sacred Heart Parish Youth Group and students from All Saints, Assumption on Cataldo Catholic Schools volunteer at PREPARES Family Center. They helped sort through donations, fill baby/toddler clothing requests, bundle diapers and help us with cleaning and organizing our space.

Thank you to these amazing young people and those who helped schedule and transport them to serve at PREPARES.

Family Resource Coordinators

UPDATE: March 2025

Recently PREPARES Family Center made a change to our protocol with human service professionals, (care coordinators, case managers, home visitors, resource coordinators, peer support specialists, etc.) who place clothing/item/diaper requests on behalf of clients.

We are requiring parents to contact us with their request and if they are unable to pick up their requests, they can give the name of the person who will pick up on their behalf.

This means if you have a parent you are serving with a schedule or transportation barrier, please have them call or email us and have them give your name as the pick up person. If it's after hours or we are on the other line, parents are welcome to leave a voicemail as well. Email is great mode of communication since busy parents can send a quick email anytime, day or night, with their concrete goods request.

For clients with a language barrier, they are welcome to email us and we can use a translating app to communicate.

This must be done every time they want you to pick up diapers, clothing or a large item for them. The GREAT news, is that we no longer need completed client consent forms on file, since we will be hearing from parent directly about who will pick up for them.

We made this change because we were missing opportunities in engaging with parents served through a third party and our desire is to be more aligned in our mission statement of creating hope, strengthening families and transforming generations.

Thank you for your support and understanding!
