MOTHER OF THREE, SLATED FOR DEPORTATION, TO RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM ELECTED OFFICIALS, UPTOWN COMMUNITY TO STAY IN U.S.

Community to Gather in Support, Deliver Letter to USCIS Requesting US Asylum

New York, NYTomorrow, Monday, August 21st at 11:00am, the upper Manhattan community will gather with Amanda Morales-Guerra, a young mother of three, who is currently in sanctuary in a Washington Heights church to avoid deportation by the Trump Administration. Elected officials, community organizations and residents will join Amanda and her children before heading downtown to deliver letters of support and an I589 form, a request for asylum, after facing death threats in her native Guatemala.

At 1pm, there will be a rally and press conference in support of Amanda, after which elected officials and Amanda's lawyer will deliver the letters to officials at 26 Federal Plaza.

Amanda has been supported by the New Sanctuary Project and Reverend Barrios at Holy Rood Church in Washington Heights. She is currently in sanctuary with her 3 children, all of whom are US citizens, and is unable to step outside the building for fear of detainment and deportation. Uptown community-based organizations have been supportive of Amanda, supplying beds, food and even music lessons for her children. As a victim of the ramped up immigration enforcement of the Trump Administration, Amanda's story resonates with the upper Manhattan community, long a haven for immigrants fleeing persecution.
