COUNCIL IMMIGRATION COMMITTEE TO VOTE ON LEGISLATION TO EXPAND MAYOR'S OFFICE OF IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS FOLLOWING DEVASTATING DACA ANNOUNCEMENT

New York, NY -- Today, September 6th, 2017 at 1:00pm, the NYC Council Committee on Immigration, led by Council Member Menchaca, will vote on 2 bills to significantly expand the role and mission of the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA). Today's vote comes in the wake of the Trump Administration's devastating decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which shielded 800,000 undocumented youth who were brought to the country by no choice of their own.

Following the announcement, rallies took place across the country in protest of this decision. Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez was arrested while participating in an act of Civil Disobedience.

The bills being voted on today include Intro 1566, sponsored by Council Members Dromm and Rodriguez, which would expand the role of MOIA to engage in expanded outreach, monitor the impacts of federal policy and more. They also include Intro 1578, introduced by Chair Menchaca, which would create an inter-agency task force, led by MOIA, to address the needs of more-vulnerable immigrant populations, such as survivors of human trafficking, domestic violence, LGBTQI individuals & more.
