FOLLOWING DEADLY BARCELONA ATTACK,
COUNCIL TRANSPORTATION CHAIR YDANIS RODRIGUEZ TO CALL ON NYC TO INSTALL MORE SAFETY BOLLARDS
New York, NY -- TODAY, Saturday, August 19th at 12:00pm Noon, Council Transportation Chair Ydanis Rodriguez and other elected officials and transportation advocates will call on the City of New York to install pedestrian safety bollards along sidewalks in key areas with high pedestrian volume to prevent potential attacks in NYC.
Council Member Rodriguez is the sponsor of
legislation currently in the City Council that would require the installation of bollards in front of schools, plazas and vision zero priority corridors, however, the call will be to begin installation now before the legislation works its way through the Council.
The heightened urgency of protecting pedestrians comes after Heather Heyer was killed by a white supremacist in Charlottesville last week with his car and in Barcelona on Thursday where 13 pedestrians were killed in a terrorist attack. This follows months of similar attacks, including one in Times Square in which an allegedly disturbed individual killed a young tourist before thankfully being stopped by a bollard.
Council Member Rodriguez will stand outside the Bank of America building on 42nd and 6th Avenue to highlight the extent to which these bollards can protect key areas, in this case a major financial institution. He will highlight why we should also be protecting children near schools, parks and cultural institutions, as well as heavily trafficked corridors in the city.

Nueva York, NY - HOY, Sábado 19 de Agosto a las 12:00 pm Mediodía, el Presidente del Comité de Transporte del Concejo Municipal, Ydanis Rodríguez, funcionarios electos y líderes del transporte más seguro demandaran a la Ciudad de Nueva York de instalar más barras de seguridad peatonal a lo largo de aceras en áreas clave con alto volumen peatonal para prevenir posibles ataques en Nueva York.
El Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez es el principal patrocinador de la legislación que esta actualmente en el Concejo Municipal que requeriría la instalación de barras de seguridad frente a escuelas, plazas y corredores, el pedido será comenzar las instalaciones ahora antes de que la legislación trabaje a través de la Consejo.
