A Coastal Escape Like No Other
Nestled along Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Chincoteague Island is a scenic seaside destination beloved by nature enthusiasts, families, and anyone seeking a relaxing escape. From the world-famous Chincoteague Ponies to pristine beaches and fresh coastal cuisine, the island offers something for every traveler.
Chincoteague serves as the gateway to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore, home to more than 14,000 acres of protected shoreline, dunes, marshes, and maritime forest. Visitors can explore miles of unspoiled beaches, scenic trails, and diverse wildlife habitats — perfect for birdwatching, hiking and biking, beachcombing, swimming, surf fishing, and soaking in spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
One of the island’s most iconic attractions is the herd of wild Chincoteague Ponies, named the Official Pony of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2023. Visitors may spot them grazing on the refuge by land and water, or attend the annual Pony Swim & Auction, held the last Wednesday and Thursday in July, a tradition that draws thousands each summer.
Outdoor Adventure on Land and Water
From kayaking peaceful salt marshes to biking picturesque island trails, outdoor recreation abounds. Guided boat tours offer close-up views of ponies, dolphins, bald eagles, and other wildlife while sharing the island’s fascinating history. Aqua and eco-tours offer immersive, hands-on, feet-in-the-water experiences, and anglers can enjoy exceptional fishing in ocean and inland waters rich with rockfish, drum, flounder, tuna, and more.
Just across the water, neighboring Wallops Island is home to NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, where rocket launches take place throughout the year and can be viewed from Chincoteague and Assateague Islands — an unforgettable bonus for visitors.
Fresh Flavors & Island Charm
No visit is complete without savoring Chincoteague’s renowned coastal cuisine. From waterfront dining to casual eateries and food trucks, menus feature local specialties like Chincoteague “Salts” oysters, clams, crab cakes, and the catch of the day. Popular events such as the Chincoteague Seafood and Oyster Festivals celebrate the region’s rich culinary heritage. Our community calendar is filled with all the details on festivals, programs, and events, both big and small, to make your visit special.
Downtown Chincoteague offers waterfront views, a charming park with oversized LOVE chairs perfect for photos, and the island offers an inviting mix of boutiques, galleries, and sweet shops. Visitors can unwind with a spa treatment, enjoy a leisurely coffee, or treat the family to ice cream after a day of exploring.
