August 17, 2022: Chincoteague Island, VA - Although children are back in school in some areas, summer vacation doesn't have to end just yet for many. Late summer and early fall are wonderful times to visit the islands. Assateague Island National Seashore is warm and beautiful well into September. Boating, kayaking and fishing top the list of water activities while biking and hiking the miles of trails can be enjoyed throughout the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. The wild Chincoteague Ponies can be seen from trails, along Beach Road or from a relaxing boat cruise around the islands.
Chincoteague Cultural Alliance offers Farmers and Artisans Markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays through September while Chincoteague Island Arts Organization offers Friday Night Classic movies at Island Theatre.
The unofficial ending of summer is traditionally celebrated on Chincoteague Island with the Chincoteague Decoy Carvers' and Artists' Association Show, featuring 30-40 area decoy carvers and artisans at the Chincoteague Center, 6155 Community Drive. Show hours are
Saturday, September 3 – 9am to 5pm and Sunday, September 4 – 10am to 4pm. Admission is $3/day with under 12 free or a $5 two-day pass. Food is available for purchase. This is a great time to watch local carvers and artists perform their amazing skill. It is also a great time to start Christmas shopping!
The Chincoteague Cultural Alliance will host their annual Plein Air Art Show & Sale at the Chincoteague Center, 6155 Community Drive, on Saturday, September 10 from 6pm to 9pm.
Fine artists from the Mid-Atlantic area and beyond will gather from September 3 through September 10 to paint "en plein air" on Chincoteague and Assateague Islands. On Saturday, their art work will be displayed for sale at the Chincoteague Center. The show is open to the public with free hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. A portion of all sales goes to help the CCA promote arts on the island.
