February Sizzles with Fun and Excitement on Chincoteague Island
Chincoteague, VA—February 9, 2021: February is heralded as the month for lovers with Valentine's Day on the 14th. For the past 14 years, Historic Main Street Merchants have hosted their famous Valentine's weekend scavenger hunt, Death by Chocolate. Historically held on President's Day weekend so visitors can enjoy a longer stay with Monday being a federal holiday, this year it will take place on Friday, February 12th (4-8 p.m.) & Saturday, February 13th (10 a.m.-4 p.m.). In an abundance of caution due to Coronavirus concerns, modifications have been made. Masks and social distancing will be required, but chocolate-gathering fun will still be the main theme. Along the way, check out the fabulous galleries, gift and souvenir shops, and boutiques along Main Street and Maddox Boulevard. Visit chincoteaguemerchants.com for all the details. The chocolate will give you energy to "shop til you drop!"
Come experience the thrilling Northrop Grumman NG15 Antares launch from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility to the International Space Station scheduled for February 20th at 12:36 p.m. EST. After stuffing yourself with chocolates and watching a spectacular rocket launch, indulge in nature at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Hike or bike the miles of trails or stroll along the peaceful winter beach. If you're lucky, you might see the rare, snowy owl or a flock of snow geese coming in for a landing. We are on the Atlantic flyway, so wintering waterfowl are in the sky and in the waters of the Assateague and Chincoteague Channels. Bald Eagles are nesting with much activity around the easily visible nest along the Wildlife Loop.
Don't forget to eat!! Many restaurants are open year round and feature delectable coastal cuisine along with some food truck favorites thrown in for good measure. Find a smorgasbord of dining options on the chamber website.
