Artu is a Mal/Shepherd mix originally from Holland and responds to commands in Dutch. He is highly trained in tracking and in detecting explosive materials, including C4, TNT, and other explosive compounds. Artu will accompany agents and investigators on a wide range of calls, including SWAT operations, whenever there is a potential threat involving explosives or suspicious devices.
“Artu gives us an added layer of safety and confidence when responding to potentially dangerous situations,” said Arson Investigator Michael Pool, who will handle Artu. “His training and abilities allow us to detect threats quickly and protect both first responders and the public.”
Artu will serve a 17-county region across West Texas and the Permian Basin, enhancing regional public safety and investigative capabilities. Over the coming weeks, he will continue advanced training alongside his handler to further strengthen their working partnership.
“This is a major asset not just for Midland County, but for the entire region,” said Fire Marshal Justin Bunch. “Artu’s presence strengthens our response capabilities and ensures we remain prepared for potential threats.”
Once fully trained and cleared for service, Artu will officially replace Mia, Midland County’s bomb detection dog for the past nine years. Mia will retire after nearly a decade of dedicated service.
The cost and training for Artu, as well as a soon-to-arrive arson detection dog, were fully funded through a grant from Chevron, eliminating any cost to taxpayers.
