Greater Memphis Chamber Statement on MSCS Management Board Legislation

MEMPHIS, TN. Monday, April 27, 2026 – The Greater Memphis Chamber remains focused on results. Improving literacy, strengthening academic achievement, and ensuring students graduate prepared for college, career, or military service must remain the central priority. These outcomes are essential to building a competitive workforce and sustaining economic growth in Greater Memphis.

As the region’s leading economic development organization, the Chamber recognizes that Memphis-Shelby County Schools is a critical driver of our region’s long-term economic success and workforce readiness.

The Chamber's Board and key investors made clear to state leaders our concerns and priorities around the proposed legislation to establish an educational management board. The legislation passed reflects a shared urgency to improve academic outcomes, strengthen accountability, engage local expertise, and promote greater stability within the district.

The Greater Memphis Chamber will continue to work alongside state and local leaders, education officials, the newly formed local management board, and community stakeholders to support implementation that delivers measurable, lasting improvement for students and strengthens the region’s workforce pipeline
