Chicagoland Apartment Association Statement on City Council Delaying Votes on Housing Proposals
CHICAGO – The Chicagoland Apartment Association released the following statement after Chicago City Council delayed voting on both the Protecting Renters Ordinance (PRO) and the Fair and Accountable Illinois Rental (FAIR) Ordinance.
“We’re pleased that the Protecting Renters Ordinance (PRO), with its excessive costs, fees, requirements, and regulatory burdens, has not advanced. At a time when Chicago is facing a housing shortage and affordability crisis, policies that make it more expensive and difficult to maintain, renovate, and build rental housing are the wrong approach.
While the Fair and Accountable Illinois Rental (FAIR) Ordinance represents a more balanced approach that provides meaningful renter protections without imposing the same level of burdens as PRO, it’s clear that more work needs to be done. We remain committed to working with the City Council and stakeholders on a practical approach that addresses Chicago’s housing shortage by encouraging investment, development, and maintenance of multifamily housing, without unnecessary regulations that make apartments more expensive to operate.
Chicago needs more homes, more investment, and more options for renters, not more hurdles,” said Michael Mini, Executive Vice President, Chicagoland Apartment Association.
