MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL — Today, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners passed a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis expressing support for the principles, ideals, and a framework focused on freedom, democracy, economic opportunity, private enterprise, and the rule of law in Cuba.
“This resolution is about supporting the democratic ideals, rule of law, and economic principles needed to help Cuba become free and successful,” said Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis. “It is also about unity. We must continue bringing together the voices of Cuban American organizations, leaders, families, and freedom advocates who have fought for this cause for generations. Together, we can rally around shared principles and a clear vision for what comes next.”
The resolution reaffirms Miami-Dade County’s support for the Cuban people and their continued fight against communist oppression. It also recognizes the importance of preparing now for a future democratic transition rooted in freedom, stability, economic opportunity, and respect for human rights.
“A free Cuba must also be a successful Cuba,” Commissioner Milian Orbis continued. “Freedom alone is not enough. Cuba’s future must be built on democratic institutions, economic opportunity, private enterprise, and the conditions that allow families to prosper and communities to thrive. The goal is to help ensure Cuba does not become a failed state, but instead becomes a success story for freedom, democracy, and prosperity.”
The legislation also calls for a future workshop along with Chairman Anthony Rodriguez Office to bring together Cuban American organizations, civic leaders, legal experts, policy voices, and freedom advocates to discuss Cuba’s democratic future. The goal is to strengthen coordination, build consensus, and help prepare a united vision for a free, stable, and prosperous Cuba when the regime falls and the Cuban people are finally free.
“For nearly 70 years, the Cuban people have suffered under a brutal communist dictatorship that has denied them freedom, opportunity, and basic human rights,” said Commissioner Milian Orbis. “I want to commend the Cuban American National Foundation, the Mas family, the Cuban American Bar Association, and all organizations working toward a free Cuba for their leadership and commitment. Their work continues to keep hope alive for millions of Cubans who dream of liberty, democracy, and prosperity.”
