CORNELIUS, N.C. – Officer Edward Florentino was dismissed from the Cornelius Police Department on August 21, 2026, following an internal investigation that found Officer Florentino had violated Cornelius Police Department General Order 25. General Order 25 outlines Rules of Conduct for all members of the agency. The investigation found that Officer Florentino violated the specific sections of General Order 25 as follows:
(16) Unbecoming Conduct (A)
a. Officers shall conduct themselves at all times, both on and off duty, in a manner which is in keeping with the highest standards of the law enforcement profession.
b. Conduct unbecoming of an officer shall include that which brings the Department into disrepute, reflects unfavorably upon the officer, damages or detracts from the reputation of any member of the Department, or impairs the operation of the Department or any of its personnel.
(17) Unsatisfactory Performance (A)
a. Members shall maintain sufficient competence to properly perform their duties and assume the responsibilities of their position.
b. Members shall perform their duties in a manner which will maintain the highest standard of efficiency in carrying out the functions and objectives of the Department. Unsatisfactory performance may be demonstrated by a lack of knowledge of the application of laws to be enforced; unwillingness or inability to perform assigned tasks; the failure to conform to work standards established for an member's rank, grade, or position; the failure to take appropriate action on the occasion of a crime, disorder, or other condition deserving police attention; neglect of duty; the display of cowardice; absence without leave, or the physical or mental inability to perform required duties.
Employee personnel records are considered confidential under North Carolina law, so the Town has no further comment on this matter.
