CORNELL COOPERATIVE EXTENSION OF DUTCHESS COUNTY HOSTED ANNUAL

“DAY IN THE LIFE OF THE HUDSON AND HARBOR” AT QUIET COVE RIVERFRONT PARK

Millbrook, NY- Quiet Cove Riverfront Park in Poughkeepsie was a host site for the 23rd Annual Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor held on Wednesday, October 15 at 9 a.m. local “Day in the Life” students, from first grade to college, partnering with environmental education centers to collect scientific data using hands-on field techniques at more than 100 sites from the Troy Dam to New York Harbor. Armed with seine nets, minnow pots and water-testing gear, thousands of students caught and released many of the Hudson’s 200-plus species of fish, tracked the river’s tides and currents, and examined water chemistry and quality. The data collected by students provides insights into an ecosystem spanning 160 miles of the Hudson River and New York Harbor and is posted online within a few days of the event.

Teens from Cornell Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County’s (CCEDC) No Child Left Inside (NCLI) program along with full time CCE Energy and Environment staff, Marist College, and parent-volunteers led students from the Poughkeepsie City School District through 5 stations at Quiet Cove offering students an opportunity for hands on learning about the Hudson River. The CCEDC Dutchess NCLI program gets youth outdoors to connect with nature while also providing important job-training and life skills to teenagers (age 14-19) from the City of Poughkeepsie and provides them with the training and experience necessary to become Environmental Ambassadors.

Now in its 23rd year, “Day in the Life” is sponsored by DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program in partnership with the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve, and Columbia Climate School Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory.
