COUNCIL MEMBER YDANIS RODRIGUEZ CALLS ON CITY TO DISSEMINATE PLAN, OUTREACH FOR FAIR FARES INITIATIVE 

Low Income Residents Awaiting Information on How to Apply for Fair Fares Initiative 
 
New York, NY - Today, Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, was joined by the Community Service Society (CSS) to call on the City to provide more information on the implementation of the Fair Fares program, set to launch in January 2019, only a few days away. One in four New Yorkers cannot afford a subway or bus fare. The communities of low-income New Yorkers that will benefit from this program do not have information on how to access the lower fare MetroCards. The press conference took place in a community with one of the highest number of working class residents and immigrants in Manhattan, who will benefit from this initiative that Council Member Rodriguez championed together with Speaker Corey Johnson, colleagues and advocates last summer. 
 
Approximately, 800,00 New York City residents live in poverty. Since 2009, straphangers and bus riders have experienced a fare increase of about 4% every other year. The Fair Fares Program will enable low-income New York City residents to purchase half-priced weekly or monthly MetroCards for subway and local-bus access for those that meet the requirements. $106 million from the City's budget was allocated to fund the start-up program for those living below the federal poverty line to deter riders from bypassing the gate or soliciting swipes from users, and empower those in need so they do not have to choose between a meal or a ride to work. 
 
"All working class riders should have the information ahead of the Fair Fares launch to know how to benefit from the program," said Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, Chair of the Transportation Committee. "Those that are eligible, should have the resources available to them in advance of the roll out of Fair Fares and know what's needed to participate. It is the responsibility of the City of New York to follow through and not let this funding and program go unnoticed."

Residentes de bajos ingresos esperan información sobre cómo solicitar la Iniciativa de tarifas justas
 
Nueva York, NY--  Hoy, el Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez, junto a la Sociedad de Servicio Comunitarios (CSS, por sus siglas en Inglés) hará un llamado a la Ciudad pidiendo que proporcione más información sobre la implementación de la Iniciativa de tarifas justas, planeado para empezar en unos cuantos días en Enero del 2019. Uno de cada cuatro Neoyorquinos no puede pagar el costo de una tarjeta de transportación pública para el metro o autobús. La comunidades de Neoyorquinos de bajos ingresos que se beneficiará de este programa aun no tiene información sobre cómo acceder a las MetroCards de tarifas más bajas. La conferencia de prensa se llevará a cabo en una comunidad con uno de los números más altos de residentes de clase trabajadora e inmigrantes en Manhattan, quienes forman parte de los beneficiarios de esta iniciativa, la cual fue defendida vigorosamente por el Concejal Rodríguez junto al Presidente del Concejo Municipal, Corey Johnson y otros colegas, el verano pasado.
 
Alrededor de 800,00 residentes de la Ciudad de Nueva York viven en la pobreza. Desde el 2009, los usuarios de transporte público han experimentado un aumento en las tarifas de aproximadamente un 4% cada dos años. La Iniciativa de tarifas justas permitirá a los residentes de bajos ingresos de la Ciudad que califican, comprar MetroCards semanales o mensuales a mitad de precio para el metro y autobuses locales. Se asignaron $106 millones del presupuesto de la Ciudad para financiar la fase inicial del programa para residentes que viven por debajo del nivel de pobreza federal y así evitar que pasajeros eludan pagar o soliciten pases a usuarios y empoderar a aquellos en necesidad para que no tengan que elegir entre pagar por una comida o un pasaje de transporte.
 
"Todos los pasajeros de clase trabajadora deben tener la información antes del lanzamiento de la Iniciativa de tarifas justas para saber cómo beneficiarse del programa", dijo el Concejal Ydanis Rodríguez, Presidente del Comité de Transporte. "Aquellos que califican, deben tener las informaciones de lugar antes del inicio del programa y saber qué se necesita para participar. Es responsabilidad de la Ciudad de Nueva York de difundir información y no dejar que este programa pase desapercibido."
