The Hippodrome brings Gainesville together with community-wide
reading initiative "One City One Story"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Hippodrome is partnering with UF School of Theatre + Dance on a stage production of the Tony Award-winning play The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Simon Stephens; based on the novel by Mark Haddon. As a part of this theatrical adaptation, we are continuing our a community-wide initiative called One City One Story , which asks the question: What if an entire community read the same book at the same time?

One City One Story was first presented at the Hippodrome in 2002 in conjunction with our production of The Diary of Anne Frank.  Revived in 2017 for our production of 1984 , Gainesville’s One City One Story project will continue, bringing the community together again through various events in August and September including:

  • The theatrical adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
  • A lecture series including talkbacks at the Hippodrome and UF-partnered panels.
  • An informal book club conversation.
  • A devised piece to be created by local teenagers which will tour the community.
  • A stage reading presentation developed in response to the novel by UF’s student theatre group, Florida Players.
  • An open mic night centered around the book’s themes of individuality & identity.
  • The shared experience of Gainesville reading and discussing the same book at the same time.

Breaking Boundaries , the concept for our 2019-2020 season, is also our goal for One City One Story . In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-TIme , the plot is not defined by Christopher’s unique characteristics (which are generally associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder – ASD), but is very much shaped by it. Through the One City One Story initiative, we invite the community to view the world through Chris’s eyes and reflect on how his story speaks to the humanity in all of us.

One City One Story demonstrates the value of community, and we hope you will join us in celebrating ours.
